Doom Infinite is a gameplay mod for the GZDoom source port, made by DifficultOldStuff. The first public release was February 14, 2023. The mod radically alters Doom's gameplay through merging Doom's normal style with various roguelike aspects and is technically more of a total conversion, often referred to as a gameplay mod in spirit instead of in actuality.
In Doom Infinite you play through randomly chosen Doom levels (almost all of which come from the four episodes of The Ultimate Doom), scoring points by killing enemies until you have enough to open the exit. In addition to the original map's things, additional items and enemies spawn randomly. The player now possesses an interactive stats system, as well as a curse buildup system which increases difficulty as you play, resulting in the familiar maps of old being 'mutated' randomly, often adding new and dangerous hazards to them, and sometimes altering their look to the point of making them nearly unrecognizeable. There are new items, new weapons, a weapon modding system, and most notably there is a powerup system well noted for its complexity, pushing the ZScript language used by GZDoom to new heights.
As a de facto TC, Doom Infinite is not compatible with most other mods. The README specifically recommends Nash's Gore Mod and the Doom Metal Soundtrack as exceptions.
Doom Infinite was awarded one of the 2023 Cacowards for best gameplay mod. It was at version 0.978.6 at the time.
