E1M2: The Dungeons is the second map of the City of the Damned episode in the enhanced Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders re-release, included with Heretic + Hexen. It uses the music track "Fred" by Kevin Schilder.

Walkthrough[edit]
Essentials[edit]
You begin inside the tower in the courtyard in the center of the level. Go down the steps to face golems and an undead warrior, then go through the wooden door in the south-east corner of the courtyard along with three more doors behind it; after opening the fourth door, watch out for the silver wall directly ahead as it conceals one to three warriors. Go east up a staircase, then turn left at the top and go north into a room with barrels. The yellow key is behind these barrels.
Go back to the courtyard and open the stone door in the south-west corner to enter an area with a curved block, which has warriors behind it. Go west through a wooden door and follow the steps down to a damaging sludge pool that contains pods. Run through the pool to the opening on the east side then go north to a tan corridor with gargoyles and three doors. Open the westernmost door to see a metal structure defended by golems and one or two warriors, then go round to the north side of the structure to enter it and get the green key, along with a Tome of Power.
Return to the courtyard and open the north-east door, then follow the passage past one or more golems to the blue key. When you take the key, the lights will go out and the walls around you will lower to reveal more golems—one or two warriors will also be released to the east. With the blue key, go back down the steps to the sludge pool and open the stone door at the bottom. Go down the stairs, passing another golem on the way, and open the exit door at the bottom to find a gargoyle protecting the blue exit switch.
Other points of interest[edit]
An ethereal crossbow can be found in the south-east corner of the map. Taking it will open the surrounding walls to reveal gargoyles. Entering the ambush chamber will open a second chamber to the north with one to three warriors, and going into that chamber will open a third ambush with golems. You can open the west wall inside the golems’ chamber to open a path to the silver shield near the yellow key room.
The room east of the green key contains two to five quartz flasks, depending on skill level. Watch out for the metal crusher above the flasks that activates when you walk underneath it.
Secrets[edit]

- After opening the third wooden door south-east of the courtyard, look at the west wall to see that it is darker. Open this wall to get behind the false wall in the next room where you will find two wand crystals, a crystal vial, and a Tome of Power. (sector 307)
- South of the yellow key is a room with a line of black columns. Go round the columns to the south-west corner of the room to find a torch and a switch. Press the switch to open the north-east wall, revealing a staircase leading back to the courtyard. (sector 96) As you descend the stairs, watch out for an ambush by golems. When you reach the bottom of the stairs, go through the wall that opens at the bottom then return to the starting tower to see that the red column inside it has opened, revealing a dragon claw along with claw orbs (and a quartz flask on bringest them oneth (BTO) or lower). Grab the weapon quickly as the red column will turn into a crusher when you step underneath it.
- Behind the yellow door is an area with a curved block. Open the darker wall on the west side of this area to find a shadowsphere and three crystal vials. (sector 32) Entering the secret opens a closet with gargoyles.
- In the sludge room, enter the passage to the south and open the dark wall at the end to enter an area with Time Bombs of the Ancients and a map scroll. (sector 301) Approaching the map scroll will open a closet to the south with golems.
- Open the dark south-east wall in secret #4 to find Gauntlets of the Necromancer, and a Ring of Invincibility on BTO or lower. (sector 38)
- In the tan corridor leading to the green key, go to the north end of the corridor to find a switch and press it to open the neighboring wall. Go up the stairs until you reach a torch with a flickering light, then open the wall opposite the torch to find Wings of Wrath. (sector 395)
- Taking the blue key opens a closet to the east containing one or two warriors. Open the darkened north wall of this closet to enter a wide corridor with gargoyles, wand crystals, crystal vials and claw orbs. (sector 345) You can open the wall with triangular stones at the west end of the corridor to get back to the green key area.
Non-official[edit]
- Go up the stairs mentioned in secret #6 and open the wall with eagle insignias at the top to find a crystal vial and two claw orbs (plus a quartz flask on BTO or lower); entering this chamber will trigger an ambush by golems and gargoyles. Open the south wall with another eagle insignia on it to find a hidden staircase leading down to the courtyard. As you reach the bottom of the stairs a lift will lower ahead—get on the lift and wait for it to rise again to reach the ledge overhead with various items, including a crystal geode, a quiver of ethereal arrows, and an energy orb.
- When the aforementioned lift lowers, the curved block past the yellow door will also lower for a few seconds. Get to the block before it lowers to get a quiver of ethereal arrows, a crystal geode, and a quartz flask (plus a silver shield on BTO or lower).

Comparison of versions[edit]
Brightness levels have been changed in several parts of the map. Additional sectors have been added to create shadows and more gradual changes in light levels.
Room design[edit]
- A wooden ceiling was added above the western door in the curved block area.
- Wooden pillars and supports were added to the yellow key room.
- Grates were added to the western wall of the sludge pool.
- Wooden pillars and supports were added to the wide corridor in secret #7.
Texture changes[edit]
- The window in front of the player at the start uses wooden flats rather than stone ones.
- The missing textures in the south-east corner of the map have been fixed.
- The cobweb in front of the green key has been moved back slightly.
- The walls of the staircase east of the green key area use a brick stucco design rather than sandstone.
- The passage leading to the blue key has a red floor and black ceiling, and skull cages were added to the walls.
- The stairs leading to the exit use different textures on the walls, ceilings and risers for a more consistent appearance.
Thing placement[edit]
- Wall torches were added at the turning on the staircase behind secret #2, and in the closet containing the golems.
- An extra blue gizmo was placed by the stone door leading to the exit, along with two serpent torches.
- Three wall torches were added to the green key room.
- A wall torch was added to secret #6.
- Extra wall torches were added in the passage leading to the blue key, and one torch on the east side was removed.
- An extra wall torch was placed opposite the torch at the top of the stairs leading to the exit.
