E1M4: The Guard Tower is the fourth map of the City of the Damned episode in the enhanced Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders re-release, included with Heretic + Hexen. It uses the music track "Elf" by Kevin Schilder.

Walkthrough[edit]

Essentials[edit]

You begin inside a small tower on the east side of the map. Go through the south door and follow the walkway round to a building containing Gauntlets of the Necromancer. Go down the stairs at the south end of the building to get to ground level, then go west along a stone path until you reach a yellow door with a square building opposite it. Kill the golems inside the building then go inside it and press the switch on the west wall to raise the bridges leading to the yellow key. Go north to some steps and climb them to get a dragon claw, then continue north to the platform with the yellow key—stepping on the platform will activate a crusher trap, so you should run across the platform to get the key safely.

Go back to the yellow door and pass through it to reach the titular guard tower. Climb up the wooden steps next to the door and follow them to the wooden building west of the tower, then drop into the pit on the south side of the building and go east to a tunnel which leads to the ground level of the tower. Collect the green key, which is behind the barrels on the east side, then go back to the pit and climb up the wooden stairs. Turn right at the top to find steps leading up to a green door, pass through it then continue going up the stairs to the top of the tower. Open the exit door to find a disciple of D'Sparil protecting the blue exit switch.

Other points of interest[edit]

The building on the west side of the dock area contains a torch and an ethereal crossbow.

Secrets[edit]

Official[edit]

  1. From the start, go through the south door and follow the wooden walkway until it turns to the west. Open the south wall with the eagle insignia on it and drop into a pit with a golem, then enter the teleporter here to go to an island on the west side of the map with a map scroll, a Morph Ovum, a Bag of Holding (or a quartz flask on smite-meister skill level or higher), and large ammo pickups. (sector 42)

Non-official[edit]

  • As soon as the level begins, turn around and open the eagle insignia behind you to find a Tome of Power. Entering the compartment releases one or two fire gargoyles.

Comparison of versions[edit]

Brightness levels have been changed in several parts of the map, and additional sectors have been added to create shadows and more gradual changes in light levels.

Room design[edit]

  • The original level had a number of missing textures due to ceilings or floors being misaligned by eight units, which have been corrected.
    • The ceilings of sectors 0 and 4 were raised by eight units to correct two linedefs with missing upper textures.
    • The floors of sectors 6, 17 and 73 were raised by eight units to correct four sidedefs with missing lower textures.
    • The floor and ceiling of sector 284 (the yellow door) were lowered by eight units to correct two sidedefs with missing lower textures.
    • A lower texture was added to sidedef 1021.
