Map of The Citadel
Letters in italics refer to marked spots on the map. Sector, thing, and linedef numbers in boldface are secrets which count toward the end-of-level tally.

Essentials[edit]

You begin at the south end of the level, facing a river that runs between four buildings. Go to the north-western building and climb up the stairs outside it, then run south at the top to jump to the south-western building. Collect the Gauntlets of the Necromancer and the silver shield in the south-east corner if you need them then collect the yellow key at the west end. Go to the north-eastern building and pass through either of its yellow doors, deal with a few gargoyles then press the switch on the east wall to raise four staircases outside. Now go into the south-eastern building and pass through a second door in the north-east corner of the room, then go up the steps and follow the balcony round a corner to the green key.

Go up any of the stone staircases at the south end of this area and open the green door at the top, slay a waiting undead warrior then press the switch inside the room to lower the red block behind you. Go down the stairs behind the block to a tunnel with golems and more warriors, then go north until you reach the second side passage and go up the steps here to enter the northern part of the level, which contains a water pool divided by a single large building. Collect the blue key at the south end of the water, then go to the north side of the building to find an ethereal crossbow in front of a blue door. Go through the door and destroy any waiting nitrogolems, including those hiding behind the stone podium in the middle of the room, then go to the north end of the room to find two switches. The left-hand switch opens the exit door above you, while the right-hand switch raises a bridge leading to it. Go through the exit door and push past one or two disciples of D'Sparil to reach the blue exit switch.

Other points of interest[edit]

Go up the stairs in the north-eastern building in the southern area to find an ethereal crossbow.

From the green key, run north-east to land in a well with a Tome of Power.

Secrets[edit]

Official[edit]

  1. In the southern area, go to the top floor of the north-western building and open the misaligned wall next to the door to find a quiver of ethereal arrows and a crystal geode. (sector 460)
  2. In the northern area, go to the west side of the large building to find a small opening, leading to a dark room with ethereal arrows. Press the switch in this room to lower a wooden wall to the north, then go back outside and run round to that wall to get on top of it. As the wall rises, enter the alcove on the east side to get a Morph Ovum. (sector 292)
  3. In the northern area, go to the staircase on the east side and get on top of the wall bordering it. Walk round to the south end of the wall and jump to a ledge with a warrior, then run south to jump to the nearby structure with Time Bombs of the Ancients and a Ring of Invincibility. (sector 325)
  4. Enter the large building in the northern area and go down the dark staircase on the east side to find a teleporter. The teleporter will send you to the ledge above the blue key which has two quivers of ethereal arrows and two more teleporters. (sector 369) The eastern teleporter goes to a fast-flowing river with ethereal arrows (and a Tome of Power on bringest them oneth (BTO) skill level or lower), while the western teleporter goes to another fast-flowing river with claw orbs and wand crystals (plus another Tome of Power on BTO or lower). At the end of the river is a hole with a Wings of Wrath inside it.

Non-official[edit]

  • In the northern area, go to the staircase on the west side and get on top of the wall bordering it. From here you can dash east to a Tome of Power (and ethereal arrows on BTO or lower), then press the switch to lower a wall and access the rest of this floor, where you can find a dragon claw.
  • After passing through the blue door, climb to the top of the stone podium and run south to drop into a well with Wings of Wrath. You can use these to reach the items in the surrounding windows.

Bugs[edit]

The player 1 start (Thing 0) has no flags set for any of the three difficulty classes, but because of special handling in the engine, it functions normally in the level.

Comparison of versions[edit]

Nearly all of the changes to this level involved the exit room.

Room design[edit]

  • The exit room is larger, taller, and no longer rectangular.
  • The windows in the exit room are higher off the ground. A second window was added to the north-west wall for symmetry.
  • The stone podium is now in the center of the exit room. To ensure the exit is still reachable, there is now a second switch under the exit door which raises a bridge between the podium and the exit.
  • A ceiling hole was added to the middle of the exit room, while a blue ceiling was added above the well.
  • Extra sectors were added to the exit room to create gradual changes in light level.

Texture changes[edit]

  • Two sidedefs with missing textures were fixed.
  • The red archway behind the blue door now has red walls underneath it rather than sandstone ones.
  • Banners were added to the walls of the exit room.
  • The well in the exit room now has a moss-covered floor to match its walls, rather than a tan texture.
  • The floor of the stone podium is made of square sandstones to match its walls.

Thing placement[edit]

  • Nitrogolem ghosts were added behind the podium in the exit room.
  • More hanging skulls and chandeliers were added to the ceiling of the exit room.
