Map of The Cathedral
Letters in italics refer to marked spots on the map. Sector, thing, and linedef numbers in boldface are secrets which count toward the end-of-level tally.

Essentials[edit]

You begin in the north-west corner of the level, with the yellow key behind you on a ledge. Collect any quartz flasks in front of you then go west to a staircase and climb up it to face some gargoyles and a golem. Continue going up the steps until you drop back into the starting room, where the yellow key has lowered, then go south through the hall ahead to an altar with crystal vials on it. Go behind the altar to find stairs leading up to a large yellow door, which leads to the central room of the map, then go to the gray block at the east end of the room and push the switch next to it to lower a lift. Ride the lift up and go through the wide door in front of you to land in a hall with four columns—walking between the columns will open them to reveal nitrogolems and a dragon claw, and there are one to three warriors hiding behind a false window on the north side of the hall. Open the mural on the east side of the hall to enter a room with a gray tomb, then open the misaligned wall in the south-east corner to reveal a staircase behind it. Go to the top of the stairs and run across the tomb to lower a lift ahead, then enter the tunnel behind it and push past some golems to reach a graveyard.

Enter the building in the middle of the graveyard then approach the stone block on the east side to lower a wall behind you, revealing a warrior and golems along with the green key. With the green key, open the silver door at the south end of the graveyard to find a Ring of Invincibility and a shortcut back to the central room, then walk between the green gizmos in the south-east corner to raise a staircase leading up to a locked door. Open the door and kill any gargoyles waiting behind it, then go west along a dark corridor guarded by warriors to find the blue key at the end. Drop back into the central room and go to the blue door in the north-east corner, open it then press the switch behind it to open the silver block in the middle of the room. Step on the teleporter underneath the block to go to E1M7: The Crypts.

Secret exit[edit]

Refer to secret #8 below for information on reaching the secret exit to E1M9: The Graveyard.

Other points of interest[edit]

After passing through the green door, go west to an alcove containing a Bag of Holding. Entering the alcove lowers the sandstone block behind you, which has a disciple of D'Sparil and Wings of Wrath on it.

Secrets[edit]

Official[edit]

  1. As soon as the level begins, turn around to see two wall carvings of hooded figures behind you. Open the left-hand carving to find Gauntlets of the Necromancer. (sector 214)
  2. Entering secret #1 opens the right-hand carving to release a nitrogolem. This alcove is also a secret, but it contains no items in single-player. (sector 193) In multiplayer this secret contains a hellstaff.
  3. In the hall with four columns, open the north-west wall to find a map scroll. (sector 282)
  4. In the hall with four columns, climb on the outer wall and go through the false window at the north end, which is indicated by hanging skulls, to find a Tome of Power and one or two energy orbs. (sector 258) Walking through the window opens two closets containing golems. You can also enter this secret by opening the wall south of the green door to find a hidden teleporter.
  5. In the hall with four columns, climb on the outer wall and open the window at the south end between the hanging skulls to find a staircase with Time Bombs of the Ancients and two ethereal arrows. (sector 2)
  6. Go to the west outer wall of the building in the graveyard to see that part of it is misaligned. Open this section to find a shadowsphere. (sector 248)
  7. Open the skull cage wall in the north-west corner of the graveyard to find a teleporter leading to a Morph Ovum. (sector 187) Open the north wall of this secret to get back to the starting point.
  8. As you step off the ledge with the blue key you may hear something open nearby. Go back through the green door and follow the corridor leading to the blue key to see that a doorway has opened in the south wall. Go through the doorway to a wooden staircase, then go to the bottom and follow the tiled path past some disciples to a switch. Press the switch to open a silver door on the bottom level, then go through it to find another disciple protecting the secret exit. (sector 47)

Non-official[edit]

  • Enter the building in the middle of the graveyard, then open the south-west wall indicated by a glowing light to find a golem ghost protecting a teleporter. The teleporter goes to the top of the stone block with a Tome of Power.
  • Open the east wall of secret #5 to find a teleporter back to the starting point.

Comparison of versions[edit]

Room design[edit]

  • A small altar with a red trident was added at the south end of the starting room.
  • The serpent torches on the steps leading up to the yellow door are now recessed into the walls.
  • The stairs leading up to the green door now rise when a player walks between the green gizmos. In the original level they were activated by a hidden switch in the graveyard building.
  • The lights in the hall of stained-glass windows glow at all times. In the original level they started blinking when a player walked between the columns in the room.
  • The switch to open the normal exit is now placed behind a blue door, rather than a metal barrier. In the original level the barrier was opened by a switch above the south-west platform in the central room.
  • The switch to open the secret exit door was moved slightly to make it easier to see. Dark alcoves were also added along the south wall leading to this switch.

Texture changes[edit]

  • Upper textures were added to the hidden stairs in the room with the gray tomb, fixing a visual bug in the original level.
  • A skull cage texture, CHAINSD3, is added to various locations throughout the level.

Thing placement[edit]

  • A blue key was added to the south-west platform.
