E2M1: The Crater is the first map of the Hell's Maw episode in the enhanced Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders re-release, included with Heretic + Hexen. It uses the music track "Acacia" by Kevin Schilder.

Walkthrough[edit]

Letters in italics refer to marked spots on the map. Sector, thing, and linedef numbers in boldface are secrets which count toward the end-of-level tally.

Essentials[edit]

You begin at the north end of the map, facing a magma pool. Deal with any waiting gargoyles then go south to two doors which have a tunnel entrance between them. Enter the tunnel, which is blocked by a weredragon on bringest them oneth skill level or higher, then follow it to find a fire gargoyle guarding an ethereal crossbow and a switch. Press the switch to open the door west of the tunnel entrance, go back outside and deal with one or two weredragons waiting behind the door, then go through the door to find a mystic urn at the entrance to a cave. Drop into the lava on the west side of the cave and enter the round tower to find the yellow key on top of a teleporter that goes back to the starting point.

Open the yellow door in the south-east corner of the crater and go down the steps to a second cave, which has a stone bridge running through a lava pit, then run through the lava to the platform at the north end with the green key. Use the steps on the west side of the lava pool to climb out then follow the stone path to a green door which is protected by more weredragons. Open the green door and climb the steps to the exit teleporter.

Other points of interest[edit]

A dragon claw can be found at the south end of the eastern cave.

Secrets[edit]

  1. In the western cave, open the brightly-lit wall next to the northern set of entrance steps to find a crystal geode, a silver shield, a Tome of Power, ethereal arrows, and crystal vials. (sector 178)
  2. Collect the Wings of Wrath from the south end of the western cave, then use the wings to fly to a Tome of Power south-east of the yellow key tower. (sector 139)
  3. Go through the yellow door and go down the steps to a round column of hardened lava. Go behind the column to find a shadowsphere and a switch that will open a wall behind you leading back the western cave. Go through that wall then look south to see that another wall has opened leading to a hellstaff. (sector 163)
  4. Stand on the green key platform and look east to see a stone wall with a small patch of hardened lava below it. Open this wall to find a mystic urn. (sector 47)

Comparison of versions[edit]

Although the critical path through the level is unchanged, the entire level has been redesigned. The most significant change is the addition of a magma pool at the starting point, creating the crater mentioned in the level’s title.

Room design[edit]

  • A secret Tome of Power was added south-east of the green key.
  • The hellstaff secret is now opened by a switch, instead of opening when you cross the bridge to the green door.
  • The mystic urn next to the green key is now marked as a secret.

Texture changes[edit]

  • The magma pools in the western and southern caves were changed to lava.

Thing placement[edit]

  • The torch in the passage next to the yellow door was removed.
  • A mystic urn was added at the entrance to the western cave.
