Inspiration and development[edit]

Desert Lands (Ruins) from Gauntlet Dark Legacy was the inspiration for this level, with the titular Demon-Sphinx being an afterthought on the author's part. The Demon-Sphinx originally had a boss fight at the end but was cut in favor of a simpler monster ambush due to E2M8 being the actual boss level.
