E3M3: The Confluence is the third map of episode The Dome of D'Sparil in the enhanced Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders re-release, included with Heretic + Hexen. It uses the music track "Watch" by Kevin Schilder.

Walkthrough[edit]
Essentials[edit]
Walk forward to drop down to the confluence, which is guarded by an iron lich and several gargoyles, then go to the northern end of the river to find the yellow key by a fence; taking the key will open the two columns behind you and release sabreclaws (or ophidians on bringest them oneth (BTO) skill level or higher). Open the yellow door on the east side of the confluence to enter a hall with some sabreclaws, then go forward to a junction and head south into a chamber with one to three ophidians and two switches. Press the western switch to lower the teleporter in the northern chamber, then enter that teleporter to go to the top of a waterfall where you can get the green key and a Ring of Invincibility.
Drop into the confluence and go through the green door at the north-east end to enter a corridor with more sabreclaws, then go round two corners and open the door on your right to enter a square junction with one or two disciples of D'Sparil. Go east through another door and kill some waiting gargoyles, then go to the east end of the room to find a firemace in front of another switch. Press the switch to open four closets behind you holding sabreclaws and mace spheres, then go back to the corridor and continue north to a hall with a large water pool. Go to the wooden steps at the north end of the room and climb up them to reach the blue key; taking it will open two compartments containing weredragons and Time Bombs of the Ancients.
Go back down to the water pool and go around its west side to a blue door, open it then collect the quartz flask in front of you to open a compartment with an ophidian and a hellstaff. Go up the stairs to a room with three switches and press the western switch to open the wall next to it and reveal a disciple; stepping under the wall will raise another staircase south of the blue door, but if you go past the wall it will close behind you and you will need to fight off more disciples to escape. Go up the second staircase to a room with nitrogolems, as well as an inferno orb under a crusher, then go through the doorway at the south end and fight through some more golems to reach a mystic urn at the top of another staircase. Go to the water pool outside and press the switch here to open the exit doors on the south side of the confluence, then go to either door and fight through some sabreclaws to reach the mosaic room at the top of the steps. Destroy a waiting ophidian (or iron lich on BTO or higher) then take the flame orb in the middle of the room to open the exit teleporter.
Other points of interest[edit]
In the room with three switches, press the two northern switches to lower the wall around the large water pool and open the large mosaic wall on its south side. Go through the mosaic wall to get a phoenix rod.
Secrets[edit]
- As soon as the level starts, open the east wall to find a hellstaff, a Tome of Power, and one or two lesser runes. (sector 140)
- In the area behind the yellow door, open the easternmost wall to find an ethereal crossbow. (sector 132)
- Go through the western green door to find a quartz flask on a green step. Take the flask then go back outside to find that a compartment with a mystic urn has opened between the green doors. (sector 57)
- Go through the eastern green door and follow the corridor until you see a wooden door on your right, which leads to a square junction. Go down the southern steps to some hanging skulls and open the north wall with a trident on it to find ethereal arrows and a Tome of Power. (sector 312)
- From the square junction mentioned in the previous secret, go through the east door and look south to see a trident wall under a small archway. Open the wall to find a Bag of Holding. (sector 73)
- In the room with three switches, open the gold banner wall between the two northern switches to find an ethereal crossbow and two or three quartz flasks. (sector 24)
- In the room with the red crusher, open the skull wall inside the middle archway in the west wall to find a Tome of Power, as well as two crystal vials and ethereal arrows on BTO or lower. (sector 352)
- From the previous secret, go up the stairs to the south. At the top of the second flight of stairs, look at the north wall to see a misaligned section and open it to get Wings of Wrath. (sector 361)
- Go through the eastern exit door and open the recessed section of the west wall to find a map scroll and a pile of mace spheres. (sector 144) The switch here can be used to lower a lift which goes up to secret #1 and the starting point.

Room design[edit]
- Additional sectors were added throughout the level to create more realistic lighting.
- Mossy steps were added to the confluence.
- An eight-pointed arrow, like those seen on teleporters, was added to the large water pool.
- The passage north of the square junction was changed to a curved corridor.
- Two closets containing disciples were added to the trap room, west of the area with three switches.
Texture changes[edit]
- The north end of the confluence was changed from brown rock walls to golden stones.
- The area behind the yellow door was changed from gray triangle walls to gray and red serpent walls.
- The corridors behind the green doors, as well as the room with the red crusher, were changed from sandstone walls to orange and gray blocks.
- The circular pool room was changed from sandstone walls to gray pillars and orange bricks. Mosaic walls were also added around the pool.
- The hallways behind the exit doors were changed from stone walls to moss-covered ones.
Thing placement[edit]
- All but one of the firemaces was removed in single-player. The remaining firemace can be found in the eastern area of the map.
- Some of the serpent torches in the circular pool room were removed.
- Secret #6 was changed to hold an ethereal crossbow and two or three quartz flasks. In the original level it held Gauntlets of the Necromancer and one to three quartz flasks. The Gauntlets were moved to the center of the confluence.
