E3M5: Chapel of Scorn is the fifth map of Inferno in Doom the Way id Did. It was originally designed by Paul Corfiatis and later edited by Gus Knezevich (Alfonzo) and Sarah Mancuso (esselfortium). The final map resembles Sandy Petersen's style more than any other id mapper. The par time defined in the DEHACKED lump is 3:30.

Essentials[edit]

Head through the right door and follow the passage up to a switch. Press it to raise a bridge to the other side, but watch out for imps both in front and behind you. Cross to the other side and flip the switch to access the valley. Here, go to the left, making sure to pick up the radiation suit in the blood and enter the small cave here with a switch. This opens a door on the far east side of the valley. Go through here taking the one path you are able to take, down the lift into the next door. Climb the stairs and follow the path to the red skull key. Now drop down and find the red door you passed along the way and hit it and the switch behind it. Now go to the other door that you could not open before and carefully cross the bridge to get to the next switch. This raises some stairs near the red door. When you go up the new set of stairs near the red door you will reach a teleporter leading to the yellow key.

Drop down and open the door to be back at where you started and open the yellow door here. Head inside of the red structure to find a switch, which opens the next door. In here, the set of stairs to your right need to be raised. Go left and down the lift into a maze-like area. Find the switch in the northern part of the maze, this will open up a door to the southeast. Take this passage until you find the next switch. You will release several monsters, but also raise the aforementioned stairs, so head back there. You will see the blue exit door on your left, and another passage to your right. Take this passage picking up the chaingun if necessary and traverse through the hall with crushers. On the other end, go through the door into the open area. You will see the blue skull key on a pedestal. To get it, go around the perimeter to a switch, which builds a bridge to the key. Grab it, but be careful of monsters appearing from several directions as you do. Backtrack to the blue door, looking out for the duo of barons, and exit.

Other points of interest[edit]

Secrets[edit]

  1. Just before the path that leads to the red key, at the top of the stairs is a misaligned wall to the north. Open this wall to acquire a berserk pack and ammo. (sector 127)
  2. Behind the door that is opened by the red switch is a bridge over lava. If you drop into the lava, head southward to find an area with a medikit, a lot of ammo, and a radiation suit. (sector 182)
  3. In the same area as Secret #2, head for the northeastern-most niche in the lava to find a winding passage. Follow this winding passage (make sure you have the radiation suit from Secret #2 handy) all the way to a plasma gun and some energy cells. (sector 249)
  4. Open the yellow door at the beginning of the map. In the next room, go behind the red structure to a teleporter. Enter it to get lots of health and armor bonuses and a backpack. (sector 102)
  5. Enter the red structure mentioned above and flip the switch to open the next door. In the next hall, look right and spot the misaligned wall. Open it to get a rocket, a medikit, a box of shells, and a computer area map. (sector 86)
  6. In the orthogonal maze north of Secret #5, find the switch in the northern part of the maze. Approach the switch and you will hear a lift lowering. Quickly make your way back to the lift you used to head down into the maze, and there will be a teleporter here. Enter it before it rises to appear in a square room with several teleporters lined up against the northern wall. Only one teleporter is the correct one, and that is the third teleporter from the right. The other ones take you back to the hall just before the orthogonal maze. When you take the correct teleporter, you will wind up in a small red corridor with a switch. Hit it to open the door, and take the next teleporter here. You will then appear in the large outdoor area in the southern part of the map, but now there is an opening to your right which has yet another teleporter. Take this teleporter, open the next door, and run across to claim the BFG9000. (sector 151)
  7. In the area where the blue key is located, drop into the blood and press on the wooden wall that has a green face on it (it is to the southwest). It will lower as a lift, and you can enter a room where the switch here will lower a soul sphere for you. (sector 107)
  8. When you approach the switch that raises the bridge to the blue key, you will also hear a nearby door opening. In the southeast alcove that had ammo clips and a medikit, an opening has appeared with a cacodemon inside who will teleport to the west. If you head into this opening, you will teleport onto a ledge where you can pick up a rocket launcher and rockets. (sector 223)
