E3M5: The Abyss is the fifth map in the Armies of Darkness episode of The Edge of Time. It was designed by FireSeraphim and uses the music track "Equinox Medley" by Tim and Mike Follin, from Equinox.

Secrets[edit]
- Climb down the curved steps and just before the end, lower the south wall to get a Pojo Egg. (sector 12)
- In the first field, head south to the fence and look up at the east wall. You will find a target to shoot. Shoot it and head to the blue rune key area to find a waterfall lowering, with argent cells, an argent channeler, and bottles full of health bonuses. (sector 84)
- In the small town at the south end, jump to the southwest rooftop for lots of treasure. (sector 204)
- In the small town at the south end, jump to the northwest rooftop for a Pojo egg, a golden medikit, and lots of treasure. (sector 210)
- From Secret #3, destroy the window to the building to the east and go through to find several powerups. (sector 242)
- Go to the pad where the heavy chaingun is and shoot the target on the south wall. Backtrack to the waterfall from before to find a doom sphere. (thing 1749)

Inspiration and development[edit]
This level was inspired by the author's fascination with underground cities, especially those built over and buried after a cataclysm destroyed them. The final portion of the level is a loose homage to the end of Doom 64's MAP13: Dark Citadel.
