E3M6: Stygian Caverns is the sixth map of the Inferno episode in Doom the Way id Did: The Lost Episodes. It was designed by Icytux.

Walkthrough[edit]

Essentials[edit]

Open the door in front of you and kill a waiting imp, then head east until you pass a damaging blood pool. Head north at this point until you get to a turning with some armor bonuses, then go west through a door and run straight forward through a doorway - the floor drops away as you walk through it, and if you are too slow you will fall into a pit with one or two spectres. Continue south-west into a corridor (the wall behind you will open to reveal monsters guarding a chainsaw in a blood pool) and kill the shotgun guys waiting in the next room, then head up some steps and press the skull switch on the south wall - this will open the eastern door and reveal a route back to the starting point. Go through that door and head east - a wooden barrier ahead has lowered, letting you climb up the steps behind it to reach the red skull key.

Drop down to the ground below and kill a cacodemon that has been released, then head east to get to an outdoor area with some white rocks. Go south-east past a shotgun guy to a T-junction, then head south over some steps and continue in that direction until you pass between two metal walls. Climb the curved staircase ahead to a red door and open it to enter a junction with a blood pool, then open the east door and head east and south-east until you reach a dead end containing the yellow skull key - taking it opens a closet containing one or two imps (plus a cacodemon on Ultra-Violence and Nightmare skill levels).

Go back to the junction and open the yellow skull bars, turn right to see lost souls guarding a skull switch and press it, then open the western door at the junction to see a bridge rising. Cross the bridge and open the door ahead, then press the button in the south-west corner of the next room to raise a bridge over the nearby blood pit. Cross the pit and head west, then look south to see the exit door; two demons (or cacodemons on Hurt Me Plenty or higher) will be released on either side of the door as you approach it. Go through the door and look right to see the exit teleporter to E3M7: Sheol's Descent.

Secret exit[edit]

Before you can reach the secret exit to E3M9: Weeping Hollow, you must collect all three keys. When you get to the outdoor area with the white rocks, go north-east and east to enter a room with a yellow flesh floor, then go to the east end of the room to find a chaingun; taking it lowers the wall ahead to reveal lost souls. Go past this wall to drop into a trench, then head west to find the blue skull key in a blood pool. Taking the key causes the blood to drop and allows some monsters to teleport in - immediately head south to reach a safe step with medikits, then kill the monsters while you wait for a teleporter to lower to the west.

Once you have all three keys, follow the directions below for secrets #6 and #9 to reach the secret exit.

Secrets[edit]

  1. Open the door below the red key and head to the big room beyond the floor trap. Use the wall just to the south of the trap to find a box of shotgun shells and a lift. The lift leads to a switch that opens up secret #8. (sector 40)
  2. Use the switch at the north-west end of the map, then head north-east through the wall that lowers. Open the wall that has metal ridges around it to find shotgun shells, a box of bullets, and a box of rockets on a lift. Use the switch to raise the lift so you can get a supercharge. (sector 130)
  3. Head east and south-east from where the red key is. When you see steps going north-east, take them up, then go past the vines to find two medikits. (sector 269)
  4. At the far north-east blood pool, a partial invisibility is to the south-east. (sector 152)
  5. Grabbing the blue key lowers the blood pool. To the south is a platform with two medikits and a box of bullets. (sector 262)
  6. At the south-east end of the map, open the wall with the pentagram to find an energy cell pack and a teleporter leading to an invulnerability, a box of shotgun shells and energy cells. (sector 196)
  7. Open the blue door north of the exit for this secret. (sector 308)
  8. From secret #7, follow the outer ledge all the way around to the left. If you used the switch in secret #1, you can access a BFG9000 and energy cells. (sector 78)
  9. To get the secret exit, enter the teleporter at secret #6, then jump west through the wall. You need all three keys to reach the secret exit. (sector 331)
