E4M4: Unruly Evil is the fourth map in episode Thy Flesh Consumed of Doom. It was designed by American McGee and uses the music track "Suspense" by Robert Prince. In the Doom Classic port, it has a par time of 2:30.
In the Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Doom, finishing this level takes the player directly to Unto the Cruel. This is due to the ports lacking the maps They Will Repent, Against Thee Wickedly and And Hell Followed.
The map title comes from James 3:8: "But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison."

Walkthrough[edit]

Red key[edit]
In the initial room, head into the door. In the next room, get the shotgun, use the lift and enter the door to get outside. Here, you can see three lava pits in the southwest, southeast and northeast. Drop into southeastern one. Turn left and get many health bonuses. Use the lift to get out of here. A wall in the northwest is open now, head there. Get the red skull key. Several traps will open.
Exit[edit]
In the outside area, open the wooden door requiring the red key in the northeast. In the next area, you need to lower all the metallic bars that block your way to the exit. Press the gargoyle switch to lower the lift. Rise on the lift. Use any teleporter to your left or to your right. They will bring you into the closets with several shotgun guys. Kill them and press a gargoyle switch to lower the bars. Now, repeat by entering the second teleporter. When all the bars are lowered now, head into the sky exit toward north.

- In the second room, take the elevator up and continue left around the walkway until you reach a green torch. Press it to lower the floor you are standing on. Continue through two archways to get a berserk pack. (sector 29)
- Return to the green torch and press it again, but only pass through the first archway. The floor in the second room will rise along with the first lift, taking you up to a rocket launcher. (sector 20)
Non-official[edit]
- In the slime-floored room on the eastern side of the map there are two alcoves. The most northeasterly pillar can be lowered from its northern side. Running across these pillars now allows leaping to the alcove in the room for additional medikits.
- Returning to the main courtyard from this room, there is a slime pool connecting the northeast corner of this room to the southeast corner of the room north of it. This is a trap but there is a hidden alcove with a partial invisibility and a teleporter inside.
Bugs[edit]
In the final room of the level, there are flat bleeds (linedefs 558, 427) visible at the top front of the side compartments when they open, and at the top of the entrances into northern compartments when they are opened and you are inside of them.
In the same room, on Ultra-Violence difficulty or higher, the cacodemon pairs in the northern compartments (with thing 108 in one pair, and thing 109 in the other) are each glued together, and will not move until one of them is killed.
Also in the northern compartments, on Hey, Not Too Rough difficulty or lower, the spectres (things 106, 107) inside will snap up into the ceiling, and block their compartments from opening. They can be killed with the rocket launcher, as the projectiles clip slightly through walls before detonating, hurting the spectres with direct damage, eventually killing them. If the switches to open the compartments are flipped first, these spectres will be unkillable as there is no way to reach them when they are stuck in the ceiling.
- When the compartments fail to open, the nearby bars blocking the exit also fail to open. Luckily, exactly one bar is unaffected and works properly, allowing the player to reach the exit.
- A similar but non-dangerous situation exists at the south side of the center yard, where there is a pen containing up to three demons (with thing 31). They can also be killed through the closed entrance of the pen with any projectile weapon such as the rocket launcher. If using a source port with the ability to look up and down, one can also kill the demons with any projectile attack by firing at the wall behind the back side of the pen.
- Though they similarly overlap the compartment door, it so happens that due to lucky data ordering in the blockmap, they first and foremost overlap the back wall which (due to an engine bug) prevents them from being affected by the moving compartment door. As a result, they are unaffected by the moving door, and once it is lowered there is room for them to move out of their overlap with the back wall and lunge at the player.
Design oddities[edit]
The four player starts (things 0, 1, 2 and 3) have no flags set for any of the three difficulty classes, but because of special handling in the engine, they function normally in the level.
