Essentials[edit]

Blue key

Grab the shotgun and kill the shotgun guys in the initial maze area. Make your way toward southeast of the maze to find the way out. In the next area you can see a marble structure with the blue skull key atop of it. Drop down into lava pit and take either eastern hallway to enter inside. Drop down into the next lava pit in the tall room. Take a radiation suit and notice a metal pillar in the middle of the room. You can lower its walls as a lift. Come to the western side of the pillar and lower it. When you rise use the western side of the teleporter pad. This will bring you to the platform in the west of the room from where you can drop toward west into a caged room. Rise up the stairs and pick the blue skull key.

Yellow key

Backtrack to the tall lava pit room with metal pillar. Come to the northern side of the pillar and lower it. When you rise use the northern side of teleporter pad. This will bring you to the northern side of the room. Turn right (east) and press the panel marked with blue skull bars. This will unlock the northern room. Walk upstairs into this room. The yellow key pedestal is not lowered yet. When you walked the stairs you have unlocked a closet in the west. Go down the stairs and head there into this dark closet. Press the switch there to lower the pedestal with the key. Return and walk upstairs. Grab the yellow skull key.

Red key

Drop down into the tall lava pit room with the metal pillar. Come to the eastern side of the pillar and lower it. When you rise use the eastern side of teleporter pad. This will bring you to the eastern side of the room. In the room with blue torches head into the balcony and enter a room to the east. You can see red and yellow skull bars blocking your way in that room. Come closer to them. A wall in the south of the room will open. Enter it and head into the teleporter inside. You will be teleported into an outside area in the east of the map. Right near you open a yellow door. Press the gargoyle button in this room to lower yellow bars. In the outside, head into the teleporter to get back into previous room. You now can see that the yellow bars are lowered and you can head into the teleporter. Enter it. You will be teleported into a balcony in the lava room. Enter into a room. There, go south and proceed the linear way toward the red key. When you grab the skull key, several platforms will rise in the lava room and a cyberdemon room will also open.

Exit

Return to the lava pit room. In case if it is not pistol start in the game and you have munitions enough to dispatch the cyberdemon (killing him is required because the blocking bars will lower), you can simply lower the pillar in the lava room and use the southern side of the teleporter to get to this room.

Otherwise, using the risen platforms get back into the room with red bars and yellow bars are already lowered. Fall into eastern outside area. This time open the red door. Press the lion button to lower skull bars. Head into teleporter to get back into the room. You now can see that the red skull bars are lowered now and you have access to the marble platform with various supplies and a teleporter. Grab the BFG9000, berserk pack and cells, then head into the teleporter. You will be teleported into southern side of the lava room. Kill the cyberdemon here. When he is killed the metallic bars will lower in the room where he was. Go to the outside area in the south. Press the lion button to beat the level.

Secrets[edit]

  1. Once you arrive at the "castle" near the beginning of the level, follow the white rocky wall along to the left. At the far end, fairly close to the fortress wall (and left of the large gnarled tree), is an alcove. Walk straight through the back wall to reach a secret tunnel. (sector 78)
  2. From secret #1, drop into the lava "moat" and make your way to its south side. There is a small green marble platform with a torch on it about halfway to the huge lava pit deeper in the castle. Open the back wall of this platform (sector 132) to get a blur sphere, and ride the lift up to a soul sphere visible earlier in the level.
  3. The yellow skull key is located on an overlook with several barred windows. You can walk right through the bars in the rightmost window, however. In the lava pit below, open the wall between the floating skull decorations on the far side to a secret area with several lost souls and a medikit. (sector 55)
Alternate way (similar to secret #2): From secret #1, drop into the lava "moat" and make your way to its north side. Open the back wall of the northern marble platform between the bullet box and the torch. Go down the stairs and keep straight on until you reach the secret sector.

Routes and tricks[edit]

It is possible to grab the red skull key, skipping the otherwise required blue skull key and yellow skull key, by straferunning into the correct angle. It is also possible to skip to the red key by straferunning from the platform with the chaingun to the other platform leading to the red key.

  1. It is possible to cause the cyberdemon to become stuck on this map by positioning oneself properly, which makes pacifist possible if that strategy is combined with monster infighting. This has been successfully demonstrated by Zero-Master as of January 7, 2018.[1]
