E5M1: Rigorous Mortis is the first map in the Out of the Aeons episode of Strange Aeons. It was designed by Mike MacDee (Impie) and uses the music track "Factory theme" from F.E.A.R.. The par time defined in MAPINFO is 30 seconds.

Walkthrough[edit]

Letters in italics refer to marked spots on the map. Sector, thing, and linedef numbers in boldface are secrets which count toward the end-of-level tally.

Essentials[edit]

The map is quite linear, and there are no keys to be collected. You should be cautious about shooting outside, however, since the whole map will hear you, and you will be faced with an army of agitated gunmen before you have a chance to arm yourself.

Clear the storeroom quickly and upgrade to a better weapon before reinforcements show up. There are several Leng chieftains between the next two rooms, half of which will already be gunning for you. The windowed room connects to the exit room via a dark and eerie hallway with a death incarnate.

Other points of interest[edit]

With a lot of skill, the pool room lift can be used to trap skeletons in the observation booth, neutralizing them.

Secrets[edit]

  1. When you first leave your house and enter the map, walk to the right and avoid the skeletons. There is a box of shells (on Hurt me plenty and above) or backpack (on Hey, not too rough and below) tucked behind the cliffs. (sector 121)
  2. A switch lowers the lift in the windowed room. Walk through the wall behind the lift (sector 43) to teleport to the observation booth in the pool room. There you can grab green armor and activate the previously useless lift.
  3. Accessing the above secret opens the ventilation grate in the windowed room, though it is not obvious at a glance: an identical grate is right behind it, but can be opened like a normal door. The courtyard has a collection of health bonuses and an AK-47. (sector 45)

Technical information[edit]

Inspiration and development[edit]

This map was originally intended as the start of a vanilla episode for Ultimate Doom that went nowhere. E5M2 and E5M4 are from the same abandoned episode, all revised and redecorated to match the Underworld motif.
