E5M3: Quay is the third map of episode The Stagnant Demesne in the enhanced Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders re-release, included with Heretic + Hexen. It uses the music track "Bluroc" by Kevin Schilder.

Walkthrough[edit]
Essentials[edit]
You start in the tree trunks at the south-west end of the map, with pods and nitrogolems on either side of you and gargoyles in the sludge pool ahead. Go north to a wooden dock and open the door here to face three sabreclaws, then go past them to an ethereal crossbow and press the inactive switch next to it to lower the sludge and open the quay gate. Go through the gate to lower a wall behind you and reveal a staircase with more sabreclaws on it, then go up the stairs to enter a large hall with stone bridges. Deal with some more gargoyles and sabreclaws then go to the north end of the room to find the yellow key, which is defended by some undead warriors.
Go through either of the yellow doors on the east side of the hall to enter a pentagonal room with a hellstaff in the center—as you enter, two barriers will rise to block the doors. Before going to the hellstaff, note the red banner on the west wall as you can press it to activate a lift. Collect the weapon to activate a crusher above the room and open three of the overhead walls to reveal disciples of D'Sparil, wait for the crusher to start moving upward then press the red banner to lower the lift holding the green key. Ride the lift up and collect the key, then wait for the crusher to move upward again before dropping down to either of the entrance doors.
Go back to the bridge area and open the northern green door to enter a room with stone columns, kill any disciples hiding behind the columns then go into the small chamber at the north end of the room to find two quartz flasks and a teleporter. Enter the teleporter to go to the sandstone ledge overlooking the bridge room and press the switch at the south end to raise the water in the southern pool, then cross this pool and open the green door on the other side to face some sabreclaws. Go up the stairs and destroy the iron lich waiting at the top, then go through the exit door and enter the teleporter behind it to go to E5M4: Courtyard.
Secret exit[edit]
To open the secret exit to E5M9: Skein of D'Sparil, you will need to obtain the blue key and reach secrets #3, #4 and #9 below.
After getting the green key, return to the bridge key and open the southern green door, then go up the steps to drop into a metal pit; the south wall will open and release sabreclaws, which you need to push past while avoiding the pods that spawn into the pit. Go through the wall to enter a second pod pit and deal with more sabreclaws, then go west and north into a third pit and quickly kill the warriors overlooking it before they detonate the pods. Collect the mystic urn to lower the east wall and reveal a switch, press it then go back to the first pit where another wall has opened, revealing more sabreclaws along with a teleporter. Enter the teleporter to go to the upper level of the second pit, run across the pods to reach a passage on the north side leading to the third pit, then run across more pods to reach the ledge that the warriors were standing on. Open the northern door and press the switch behind it, then go back to the bridge area where the middle water pool has lowered to reveal a tunnel. Enter the tunnel and press the switch at the end to lower the blue key behind you; picking it up will release some more sabreclaws into the tunnel.

Secrets[edit]
- Go through the quay gate to open a closet on the east side of the sludge pool with one or two liches. Enter the closet to get a Ring of Invincibility, an energy orb, a quiver of ethereal arrows, and a quartz flask. (sector 48)
- Near the yellow key is a brick wall between two braziers. Open this wall to find a mystic urn, but watch out for the nitrogolems that are released around it. (sector 200)
- From the green key platform, run north or south to land on the barrels bordering the pentagonal room, then run along them to reach the platform at the east end with warrior ghosts. Press the switch here to open the north and south walls and reveal two staircases, then go up the north staircase and follow the walkway past an ambush by nitrogolem ghosts to its west end. Open the red banner to reveal a sabreclaw and a switch. (sector 194)
- Press the switch in secret #3, then climb up the south staircase you revealed earlier and go to the west end of the walkway. A wall has opened revealing a switch, which will open three silver doors around the map. (sector 127)
- After pressing the switch in secret #4, go through the silver door next to the yellow key to reach a dock area with wand crystals, a quartz flask, a Tome of Power, lesser runes, and a claw orb. (sector 92)
- Go through the southern green door and walk south to the metal pit, but do not go into it. Look north to see a warrior protecting a switch, which will open a banner behind you revealing a compartment with Time Bombs of the Ancients. (sector 413)
- Go through the northern green door to enter the room above the blue key, which has a moss-covered step running around it. Open the spine wall at the south-east end of the step to find a map scroll. (sector 260)
- At the north end of the moss-covered step is a doorway leading to a teleporter. Open the wall east of the doorway, which is misaligned, to find a Morph Ovum and two lesser runes. (sector 267)
- After pressing the switch in secret #4 and obtaining the blue key, return to the room near the start where you found the ethereal crossbow. Go through the open silver door and open the exit door at the end of the hall to find the secret exit. (sector 135)
Bugs[edit]
This level only has two deathmatch spawn points, making the level unplayable in deathmatch.
Demo files[edit]
Comparison of versions[edit]
Most of the level was redesigned, and five more secrets were added, bringing the official total to nine.
Room design[edit]
- The start of the level was changed to trees.
- A large metal gate was added at the north end of the starting area.
- The eastern room was changed to a pentagonal crusher
- Three pod pits were added at the south end of the level.
- The normal exit teleporter was moved to the cage east of the starting point, while the secret exit was moved to the corridor west of the start.
Texture changes[edit]
- The pool below the starting point was changed to sludge, which later turns into water.
Thing placement[edit]
- The firemaces and maulotaurs found in the original level were removed.
- The yellow key was moved to the north end of the bridge area.
- The green key was moved to the pentagonal crusher room.
- The blue key was moved to the center of the northern room.
- The number of deathmatch spawn points was reduced from four to two, making the level unplayable in deathmatch.
