E5M4: Paths of Wretchedness is the fourth map of SIGIL. It was designed by John Romero and uses the music track "The Patrolman" by Buckethead as well as "Riot Squadron" by James Paddock (Jimmy). The par time defined in the DEHACKED lump is 7:00.

Essentials[edit]

At the start of the level. You are presented with three passages, each of which contains one skull key. You need to collect all three keys to unlock the southernmost portion of the map that leads to the exit. The order in which you tackle them does not matter, but the middle passage should be avoided until you picked up some armor, since you will have to run over damaging floor. Make sure to pick up both the shotgun and the chainsaw before you continue.

Red key: Take the passage on the left, up the stairs. You will have to work your way along a narrow walkway/ledge with a rock formation on your right, and enemy outposts on your left, a baron of Hell among them. Note that there are some gaps in the walkway, so be careful not to slip. Once you cross the second gap, a wall behind you will raise, blocking the path back to the start. Shoot the evil eye that is hidden inside a crack in the rock just before the second brick column. This will raise a ramp leading over the lava to the caged outposts. The path to the right leads to the red skull key, while the left path has a soulsphere at its end. Once the red key is collected, jump down into room with the red, yellow and blue barrier, pick up the megaarmor, and use the teleporter to return to the start of the map.

Yellow Key: Run through the middle passage, straight into the lava. There are some rock platforms, but they will begin to sink as soon as you step on them, so do not waste too much time fighting the monsters in your path. Ignore the lost souls, quickly shoot the shotgunners, and run past the imps into the entrance of the small cave that is covered with roots directly in front. Inside you will find the yellow skull key and can take your time killing the monsters coming after you. Afterwards, return into the lava, and run to the right. You will be met by a cacodemon, but it is better to run around it and fight it from the platform before the yellow door in order to avoid further damage from the floor. There are two pinky demons hiding behind the two pillars, and approaching the yellow door itself will open a monster closet in the eastern wall, which contains a baron of Hell and a cacodemon on UV. Note also that you cannot just escape through the yellow door, as the door takes about 20 seconds to open up. Once the door is finally open, go through it, drop down into the barrier room, and return to the start the map through the teleporter.

Blue Key: Take the passage on your right. There are an imp and a shotgunner behind the brick wall—swiftly eliminate them and continue onto the platform ahead. Move around the steel blocks and follow the path down the stairs. As you move forward, you will trigger a sunken part of the floor to rise up, revealing a baron of Hell on it. You can either deal with it now, or try to lure it outside, then run around it. Afterwards, continue straight on and around the two torches. Beware that the next room is trapped with crushing ceilings! You are safe as long as your back is touching the middle brick wall. Strafe along its western side and keep your eyes on the western wall of the room. There are three barred closets that will open up, with the middle one containing an evil eye that you have to shoot to open a path into the closets. Inside is a switch that opens up a passage to the south that connects the closets on both sides of the room and leads onward to the crusher zone. The area only contains a few spots where you can safely stand, which are marked by their floor sinking visibly from time to time. It is not so easy to verify your exact standing position, so if you run for a safe spot, it is easier to do so when it is in a lowered position. Note also that the markings on the floor mirror the shape of the crusher above it. Once you made it to the fleshy cage with the blood floor in the northeast, the blue skull key is located directly toward the south, hidden from sight around a corner. Kill the lost souls, and press the switch on the wall to lower the elevator that takes you to the barrier room. Press all three switches to lower the barrier itself and open the path to the final area.

Finale: Continue straight on and the wall in front of you will lower, revealing some shotgunners, with a chaingun behind them. As you move over the bridge to pick it up, two cacodemons will flank you from both sides of the lava pool. Walk into the cave up ahead, and kill all the enemies inside. Its western wall will lower to reveal even more monsters and a radiation suit. Once you killed everything, grab the radiation suit and jump into the eastern half of the lava pool, which has a green armor in it. At the northeastern edge of the area is a hidden compartment with a lion switch inside it. Pressing it will lower part of the bridge, giving you access to the western half of the lava pool, and reveals two barons of Hell (along with some minor enemies) on the bridge itself. Use one of the teleporters in either half of the lava pool to return to the barrier hall. Eliminate the barons, and use the lion switch on the bridge to raise the passage to the cave back up. Inside the cave you will find that its eastern wall has now lowered, opening up the path to the exit. Kill the remaining enemies, including yet another baron and cacodemon, as well as a few caged imps, and approach Baphomet's image to end the level.

Secrets[edit]

  1. Take the path southwest of the starting point but instead of going around the marble wall, head south and into the cave containing rockets and a rocket launcher. (sector 171)
  2. Now keep going along the path until you reach a hole that rises up with a baron of Hell on it. This platform will lower again, allowing you to access a western passage that leads to an invulnerability. (sector 193)
  3. Shoot the eye in the crusher hallways, then head to the east side. Use the lion switch, then walk through it (it's a fake wall) to find a soul sphere. (sector 238)
  4. On the eastern path, shoot the eye you find to raise a bridge to the south. Cross this bridge and get to the north side. As you head to the north side, find a gap between the fences and go around the outside fence going south towards the lion-faced column. Head into the room to find a rocket launcher, a medikit (not on Ultra-Violence or higher) and a box of rockets (or just a rocket on Ultra-Violence or higher). (sector 479)
  5. At the southernmost part of the map, head towards the east wall which will reveal a wall behind you with cacodemons in it. The wall to the left of the leftmost torch is speckled with red - open it to find a box of shotgun shells, a backpack, and an energy cell (not on Ultra-Violence or higher). (sector 55)
