E6M8: Abyss of Despair is the eighth and final map of SIGIL II. It was designed by John Romero and uses the music track "Vitriolic Vendetta" by Bryant Lowry (Thorr), as well as the MIDI track "Final Impact" by James Paddock (Jimmy). The par time defined in the DEHACKED lump is 6:30.

Walkthrough[edit]

Essentials[edit]

You begin on a platform with some lost souls. Go north to a fork, noting the colored bars on each side of it, then take the left-hand path and follow the stairs down past some demons, imps and shotgun guys until you reach a white lift. Ride the lift down and continue following the stairs down to the blue skull key, which is guarded by a baron of Hell, then go back up to the fork and take the right-hand path this time. The path splits in two for a short distance before merging again and bringing you to a plasma gun at the foot of another staircase, which goes up to another baron and the red skull key.

Go back to the fork and open both sets of colored bars, press the lion switches behind them then go back to the starting platform, where a bridge leading to a pentagram teleporter has opened. Go to the pentagram and collect the supercharge and ammo boxes on the platform to the north, then step across the middle of the pentagram to go to another platform that is overlooked by a spiderdemon and two cyberdemons, which are on moving floors. After killing all the enemies, you can use the bridge running around the edge of the arena to reach the exit room, which is blocked by a high wall that takes some time to lower.

Once the exit room opens, kill any waiting imps and cacodemons then approach the exit portal at the south end of the room to open an alcove with a skull switch near the entrance. Enter the alcove and press the switch to open the exit portal and reveal a baron, then run back to the portal and catch the lift underneath it to reach the portal, which you can now step through to end the game.

Secrets[edit]

  1. From the start, head north and then all the way north-west. You will find a box of rockets, partial invisibility, shotgun shells, and a berserk pack. This secret closes after thirty seconds have passed in the level. (sector 156)
  2. Head south from secret #1 and look to the south-east for an evil eye. Shoot it to reveal a stimpack, a box of bullets, and shotgun shells. (sector 249)
  3. On the way to the blue key, after a lift down, look west and shoot the eye to find a box of bullets, an energy cell pack, and a medikit (not on Ultra-Violence or higher). (sector 222)
  4. Take the east path at the split and after the two red pillars, find a FIREBLU wall to the south and shoot it to open a nearby wall with an armor bonus and a medikit. (sector 243)
  5. Take the outer of two paths east of secret #4. When the path turns north, look south and find an evil eye to shoot. This will open a nearby wall with a box of bullets, a stimpack, and an energy cell. (sector 255)
  6. Shoot an eye north-east of the red key to open a compartment down the steps with a berserk pack and a megaarmor. (sector 125)
  7. Open the red bars and look north to shoot an evil eye. This opens the wall behind you allowing you to get a box of rockets and a supercharge. (sector 228)
