Monster
From DoomWiki.org
A monster is any artificially intelligent thing that is not spawned if the -nomonsters parameter is used. In single player and cooperative games, much of a user's playing time is spent in combat with enemy monsters. Monsters are either placed in a level during its design, created by another monster (particularly, the pain elemental spawns lost souls), or spawned by the final boss.
Any monster placed in a level or created by the final boss is initially dormant and becomes active only when it sees a player, when it sustains a damaging attack, or when it hears a player attack, even if this is with the (otherwise silent) fist. When activated, a monster will advance on its target and attack, sensing the location of thing they are after even if it is out of sight, and advancing toward that location even if it is on the other side of the level. If a monster hits an obstruction during its hunt for its target, it will attempt to walk around it. Monsters that have been alerted normally remain active indefinitely, even after respawning or being resurrected by an arch-vile. However, there is a bug which returns any active monsters to a dormant state if the user re-loads a saved game. In general, monsters of different types can accidentally hurt each other and will often turn against each other in such cases, engaging in monster infighting. If a monster defeats an aggressor without ever seeing or hearing a player, it will return to a dormant state.
Monsters can use some types of teleporters, although they do so accidentally, as their artificial intelligence is very limited. Monsters can similarly activate lifts and open certain doors, although some monsters may not fit through doors and openings that are just large enough for the player. Monsters can be hurt and killed by crushing ceilings, but are unaffected by all forms of damaging floors.

Doom games[edit]
The monsters of Doom can be classified into two groups: the former humans possessed by demonic forces, and the demonic monsters (or hellspawn) originating in hell or arriving from there.
Doom[edit]
Doom and its retail extension, The Ultimate Doom, include the following monsters:
- Former Human: Once a marine or guard like the protagonist, now a green-haired, hell-possessed soldier carrying a rifle. The weakest of all enemies and therefore, the easiest to kill. It has 20 hit points.
- Former Human Sergeant: A zombie in black clothing with a shotgun. A bit stronger than the former human and moderately dangerous at close-range, but still very easy to gun down. It has 30 hit points.
- Imp: A brown, human-sized humanoid demon that throws round fireballs and claws opponents at close range. It has 60 hit points.
- Demon: About the size of a gorilla, this muscular pink brute runs quickly on its two hind legs to bite opponents. It has 150 hit points.
- Spectre: Identical to the demon, except that it is partially invisible. Like its non-translucent counterpoint, it has 150 points.
- Lost soul: A floating, flaming skull that can rush quickly to gore at an opponent. It has 100 hit points.
- Cacodemon: A large flying head-like monster with red scales, horns, and one eye. It moves relatively slowly, but has strong jaws and spits out "lightning balls" from a distance. It has 400 hit points.
- Baron of Hell: Two of these act as the boss in Knee-Deep in the Dead, resembling large pink satyrs. It can hurl streaming balls of green flame or energy and employs a powerful clawing attack at close range. It has 1000 hit points.
- Cyberdemon: The massive boss in The Shores of Hell, a monstrous humanoid cyborg as tall as two men that can absorb more damage than any other monster and moves at a relatively rapid rate for its size, pausing only to fire rockets from its mechanic arm at anything foolish enough to oppose it. It has 4000 hit points.
- Spiderdemon: The cybernetic boss in Inferno and Thy Flesh Consumed. It appears as an enormous brain with eyes, a mouth, and comparatively small arms, atop a four-legged metal chassis with an incorporated triple-strength chaingun. It has 3000 hit points.
Doom II[edit]
Doom II (and thus also Final Doom) includes the same monsters as Doom in addition to the following monsters:
- Heavy weapon dude: A tough, corpulent zombie with a darker skin, red armor and carries a chaingun. It has 70 hit points.
- Hell knight: Identical to the baron of Hell but tanned in color, emits higher-pitched sounds and endures only half as much damage. It has 500 hit points.
- Revenant: A tall, skeletal demon wearing silver body armor that can launch ballistic or guided missiles, and punch opponents when at close quarters. These are the results of recycled demon combatants. It has 300 hit points.
- Mancubus: A grotesquely bloated humanoid with flamethrowers instead of forearms. It moves slowly, but takes a fair amount of ordnance to bring down. It has 600 hit points.
- Arachnotron: Strongly resembles the spiderdemon, but is much smaller, and shoots greenish plasma instead of super-chaingun rounds. It has 500 hit points.
- Pain elemental: A large flying head resembling a brown cacodemon with small arms. It attacks by spitting lost souls at its target, and even creates a few more as it dies. It has 400 hit points.
- Arch-vile: A peach-colored, emaciated humanoid demon who is quite tough for its size. It can summon bright yellow flames to engulf and blast targets, and knows how to bring dead monsters back to life. It is the fastest monster in Doom II, almost one and a half times as fast as the cyberdemon (however, while playing on Nightmare! difficulty or otherwise playing with -fast parameter set, demons and spectres become the fastest monsters in the game instead). It has 700 hit points.
- Wolfenstein SS: Populates the two Wolfenstein-themed secret levels and attacks with a medium-strength machine gun. He has 50 hit points.
- Commander Keen: A hanged effigy of the cosmonaut from id Software's pioneering series of games only appearing in MAP32: Grosse. It neither moves nor attacks, although killing all four Keen figures is necessary to reveal the exit switch and finish the level. He has 100 hit points.
- The final boss is not technically a monster, but does still represent one of the protagonist's opponents. It has 250 hit points.
The 2024 expansion Legacy of Rust includes the same monsters as Doom II, along with the following additional monsters:
- Banshee: Based on an unused enemy somewhat similar to the Blob, explodes when slain or upon entering contact with the player. It has 100 hit points.
- Ghoul: Based on an early lost soul design. Flies around and shoots fast projectiles that deal 3-24 damage. It has 50 hit points.
- Mindweaver: Based on an early version of the arachnotron with a super chaingun, functions as a weaker version of the spiderdemon. It has 500 hit points.
- Shocktrooper: Based on the player's sprites. Fires a plasma gun at a fast rate. It has 100 hit points. Works similarly to the Evil Marine enemy from Scythe 2, except slower.
- Tyrant: A smaller version of the cyberdemon with green wires, no horns and an organic right leg. It has 1000 hit points.
- Vassago: A large charred-black demon with wings. It throws fireballs that burn for a few seconds after impact. It has 1000 hit points.
Sony PlayStation / Sega Saturn[edit]
The ports of Doom and Final Doom for the Sony PlayStation lack the arch-vile, Wolfenstein SS, Commander Keen and final boss, but include the capability to create a new class of nightmare monsters, which results in the presence of an additional monster over the PC versions:
Doom 64[edit]
Doom 64 includes newly drawn versions of the Doom and Doom II monsters. The revenant, heavy weapon dude, arch-vile, spiderdemon, Wolfenstein SS, Commander Keen and final boss are not present, but instead it features some new monsters:
- Nightmare imp: A darker, translucent version of the regular imp, boasting double the movement speed as well as a stronger projectile. It has 60 hit points.
- Mother demon: The final boss of Doom 64. Responsible for the resurrection of all demon life in the Mars base, this floating, four-armed abomination attacks through a vicious combo of fire trails that flings the player into the air and highly damaging homing missiles akin to the revenant's. She has 5000 hit points.
Newer Doom franchise games[edit]
The newer games of the Doom franchise generally include a set of monsters from the PC Doom games or inspired on them and possibly a number of new creations. Various ports include the same sprites as their predecessors, although some change their appearances either to achieve a new style (such as in Doom 64) and the newer games (such as Doom 3) provide polygonal versions that suit their more advanced technology and rendering capabilities.
Doom RPG[edit]
Doom RPG features almost all of the monsters from Doom II, with the exception of the shotgun guy, spectre (in some versions, the belphegor is a spectre), arachnotron, Wolfenstein SS, Commander Keen and spiderdemon (as well as the final boss). It includes the following unique monsters:
Non-boss enemies in Doom RPG are organized into classes. For example, there are three types of imps, while the Hell knight and baron of Hell both belong to the "baron" class. Monsters in the same class use the same sprites, but are somewhat differently colored and vary in difficulty.
Arch-vile | Baron/knight | Cacodemon | Chaingunner | Demon | Hellhound | Imp | Lost soul | Mancubus | Pain elemental | Revenant | Zombieman |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Infernis | Ogre | Malwrath | Troop | Bull demon | Hellhound | Impling | Phantom | Behemoth | Beholder | Ghoul | Private |
Archvile | Knight | Cacodemon | Commando | Pinky demon | Cerberus | Imp | Lost soul | Mancubus | Rahovart | Fiend | Lieutenant |
Apollyon | Baron | Wretched | Assassin | Belphegor | Demon wolf | Imp lord | Nightmare | Druj | Pain elemental | Revenant | Captain |
Doom II RPG[edit]
The Doom RPG sequel Doom II RPG has almost the same enemy entity set as Doom RPG, but adds a few of its own. It brings back the spiderdemon, with the arachnotron as a minion. It also adds the following NPC classes:
Sawcubus | Watcher | Zombie |
---|---|---|
Lesser Sawcubus | Brier | Zombie civilian |
Greater Sawcubus | Watcher | Zombie worker |
Chainstrosity | Sentinel | Zombie tech |
In addition to the new classes of enemies the game has two new boss class entities; the Pinkynator and VIOS.

Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil[edit]
All the monsters in Doom 3 appear in Resurrection of Evil, except the sabaoth, vagary, cyberdemon, guardian, seeker and lost soul. Additionally, some new monsters are included:
- Bio-suit zombie
- Bruiser
- Forgotten One (which resembles the classic lost soul more than does its namesake)
- Hell hunter
- Maledict
- Vulgar
Doom (2016)[edit]
The 2016 Doom game saw some new monster designs, though the majority are remastered designs of the monsters from Doom and Doom II. Many of Doom 3's monster designs were scrapped in favor of making the monsters resemble their appearances in the classic games. The following monsters return:
- Baron of Hell: Reminiscent of its classic version and able to attack with energy bolts and a ground slam in addition to strong melee attacks.
- Cacodemon: The cacodemon spits orbs of toxic bile that blind whoever they hit, making them vulnerable to a deadly bite.
- Cyberdemon: A heavily armored cyborg which supplements its rocket barrages with energy waves and a powerful laser cannon.
- Hell knight: It retains a design similar to the one in Doom 3, but has become a powerful melee-only attacker.
- Imp: Significantly faster than prior incarnations of the Imp, it can now charge up its fireballs for more damage, perform leaping strikes, and climb up walls.
- Lost soul: A suicide attacker that explodes when it reaches its target.
- Mancubus: Similar to its Doom II version, but now has a flamethrower it can use at close range.
- Pinky: Resembling their classic counterparts, Pinkies attack by blindly charging at full speed and biting whatever survives their initial charge. While resilient and heavily armored from the front, they cannot turn in the middle of a charge and take extra damage when attacked from behind.
- Possessed: The equivalents of zombies and former humans.
- Possessed scientist: The most common type of Possessed, limited to basic melee attacks that pose little threat.
- Possessed engineer: Embedded with explosives that detonate when it is killed.
- Possessed soldier: Armed with a rapid-firing gun, which can fire charged shots for more damage.
- Possessed security: Armed with a shotgun and carries a shield that blocks most frontal attacks.
- Revenant: Now equipped with a jetpack that it can use to perform aerial assaults.
- Spectre: Semi-invisible Pinkies that sneak up on their victims to attack but are not averse to charging either.
- Spider Mastermind: The final boss, capable of attacking with both a devastating plasma weapon and its own psychic powers.
The following monsters were introduced in Doom (2016):
- Cyber-mancubus: An armored cyborg mancubus with significantly more health and higher damage output. It lacks the mancubus's flamethrowers, but it has a longer range and the projectiles it fires leave behind pools of poison when they hit the ground.
- Harvester: A multiplayer exclusive creature that can conjure electric beams.
- Hell guard: A golem-like boss controlled by a parasite which protects the Crucible.
- Hell razer: An enemy with an arm cannon that shoots lasers at the player.
- Prowler: A multiplayer exclusive melee-only creature with powerful instant-kill attacks.
- Summoner: A demon that summons other demons and can teleport to avoid fire. It is inspired by the classic arch-vile.
- Unwilling: An unarmed cannon fodder zombie that appears primarily in Hell. They are similar in concept to the bony zombie of Doom 3.
Doom Eternal[edit]
Many of the Doom (2016) monsters reappeared in Doom Eternal, along with several re-imagined versions of classic monsters and entirely new ones.
- Arch-vile: In addition to summoning powered-up monsters like the buff totem, the arch-vile possesses a potent shield and deadly hellfire attacks, and can also teleport out of harm's way. However, it cannot attack and shield itself at the same time.
- Arachnotron: The arachnotron can cling to walls and ceilings, and attacks with a destructible plasma gun and grenades. If forced into melee, it can use a claw swipe.
- Baron of Hell: The baron of Hell now wields twin flaming swords, enabling it to strike from a longer distance.
- Cacodemon: The cacodemon can now lunge forward to close the gap between the player and its deadly jaws. It can be easily removed from combat by launching sticky bombs or grenades into its gaping maw.
- Cyber-mancubus: Although its bile launchers are indestructible, a single blood punch from the Doom Slayer is enough to shatter its strong armor.
- Hell knight: Its visual design is refined to further resemble its Doom 3 counterpart, complete with eyes.
- Imp: Redesigned to look like its classic incarnation.
- Mancubus: Redesigned to look like its classic incarnation. Its powerful flamethrowers can now be shot off.
- Lost soul
- Pain elemental: The pain elemental can now attack directly by throwing lost souls like grenades, and can also command them to protect it from attack.
- Pinky
- Prowler: Can teleport short distances to outflank the player.
- Revenant: Now armed with an array of lock-on missiles that require the player to dash or double jump away from.
- Soldier (Blaster): A new version of the classic zombieman combined with the attacks and mobility of the possessed soldier from Doom (2016) as well as a jump pack.
- Soldier (Shield): A new version of the classic shotgun guy combined with the attacks, defensive abilities, and mobility of the possessed security from Doom (2016).
- Spectre: Although its invisibility prevents it from being targeted by certain lock-on weapons, it is bereft of the frontal armor of the regular pinky.
- Zombie
The following monsters were introduced in Doom Eternal:
- Buff totem: An environmental entity that constantly summons powered-up monsters until the player pulls it out of the ground.
- Carcass: A cyborg zombie that can generate a shield to protect allies.
- Dread knight: A Hell knight enhanced with cybernetics and armed with energy blades.
- Doom hunter: A half-hover tank, half-demon abomination armed with multiple weapons systems. It is protected by an energy shield until its sled is destroyed.
- Gargoyle: A small, flying demon that attacks with claws and toxic spit.
- Gladiator: A demon resembling a larger baron of Hell, which attacks with a flail and shield.
- Icon of Sin: Originally appearing in Doom (2016) as an Easter egg, the Icon of Sin appears as the final boss of Doom Eternal. It now possesses a full body and appears to be at least the size of a large building.
- Khan Maykr: The leader of the Maykrs, and the primary antagonist of the game.
- Marauder: An elite demon born from a traitorous Night Sentinel. It is armed with a Super Shotgun and an Argent battle-axe, and is highly resistant to all damage unless attacked at a specific time. It can also summon a wolf to harrass the player.
- Maykr drone: A lesser Maykr with considerable armor but a vulnerable head.
- Tentacle: An environmental entity that comes from the ground and hits the player by surprise.
- Tyrant: A new demon visually inspired by the classic cyberdemon.
- Whiplash: A cybernetic serpentine demon able to strike from afar with flaming whips.
The Ancient Gods, Part One[edit]
The Ancient Gods, Part One adds the following additional monsters:
- Blood Maykr: A Maykr angel that has been corrupted by the influence of Hell. While it shares a weak head with the Maykr drone, it is able to generate a shield that blocks damage which only drops when performing certain attacks.
- Spirit: A ghostly version of the summoner which cannot attack directly, but can possess other monsters to grant them additional defensive and offensive strength. It can only be killed by the plasma rifle's microwave beam mod.
- Turret: An upgraded version of the Eyes of Kalibas. They now have dedicated stands into which they can retract for safety before emerging to fire rapidly at the player.
- Whiplash spectre: An invisible variant of the whiplash, similar to the spectre. While unacknowledged by the codex, the monster is named as such should it be chosen to become an empowered demon.
- Trial of Maligog: Turrets combined with punch blocks with attacks which slow down the Slayer. Each must be shot until it falls to the floor and then punched into the central shield in the arena, which destroys it.
- Samur Maykr, the Doom Slayer's former ally.
The Ancient Gods, Part Two[edit]
The Ancient Gods, Part Two adds the following additional monsters:
- Armored baron: A variant of the baron encased in regenerating armor and equipped with a morning star. Its armor can be destroyed by targeting its morning star when it flashes green.
- Cursed prowler: A variant of the prowler that sneaks in to poison the player with its cursed claws and then retreats, forcing the player to chase it down and kill it with a blood punch.
- Demonic trooper - An ambient enemy found in Immora; they sport Doom 2016's multiplayer exclusive Catalyst armor and reaper gun. They are extremely weak and can die from any form of interaction with the Slayer.
- Riot soldier: Chaingun-wielding possessed soldiers carrying gold shields which cannot be broken.
- Screecher: A zombie which, when killed, unleashes a powerful shriek which buffs other demons, but will die if it is the last monster alive.
- Stone imp: A more damage-resistant form of the imp with gray skin and purple eyes and claws which can coil up and dash at the player, but is susceptible to the Full Auto mod or the Sentinel Hammer.
- The Dark Lord: The leader of the demons and ruler of Hell, who fights the Slayer in a suit of powered armor. He has a variety of attacks and can heal himself by damaging the Slayer.
Other games based on the Doom engine[edit]
Games powered by a modification of the Doom engine include a particular set of monsters suiting their setting, style and game behavior. These monsters share various basic characteristics of the Doom game monsters but may show some differences, such as being capable of multiple types of ranged attacks or being subject to the additional possibilities of game scripting (namely ACS in Hexen).
