Essentials[edit]

Upon reaching the Forest of Gloom, your first task should be to seek out the Temple of Divine Shadow to view a cutscene and pick up the first of three Flame Masks. Your ultimate goal is to find five gems to slot into the mural in the back, which will trigger the final boss battle. Each of the gem is found in a different level in Veil of Darkness, with none being found in the Forest of Gloom itself. You can get an emerald in Stinksump Swamp, another in the Forgotten Graveyard, a sapphire in the Catacombs of Ice, another sapphire in Hidden Machinations, and a ruby in Bloodwind Castle.

From there, you have a few options about where to go next. The church in the Village of Loneraven contains the horn key, which is rewarded after solving a puzzle involving the four orbs found around the forest. Coloring the orbs in this order will cause the Horn Key to appear when you use the switch inside the church:

  1. Northern Loneraven Orb - Red
  2. Orb just outside of Loneraven - Yellow
  3. Orb outside of Bloodwind Castle - Blue
  4. Orb outside of The Old Mill - Green

You can use the horn key to open a gate near Bloodwind Castle that leads back to a ledge in Stinksump Swamp where you can find the first emerald.

Close to the Village of Loneraven is the Tower of the Elevated, where you can find the Bloodwind Castle key at the top. This will grant you access to the Bloodwind Castle area.

The Abandoned Mine is freely accessible from the start and requires no other items to enter.

You can make some progress into Griffin Gatehouse with the Flame Mask from the Temple of Divine Shadow, but you will also need Flame Masks from The Abandoned Mine and the Lower Chambers in order to fully explore that area.

The Old Mill connects to Hidden Machinations, but requires three gears from The Abandoned Mine, Griffin Gatehouse and the Lower Chambers.

The Catacombs of Ice requires the Frost Mask from Griffin Gatehouse in order to be accessible.

Other points of interest[edit]

There is a healing fountain in the center of the forest that requires five Ambrosia Blooms to be activated. You can find them at the following locations:

  1. Located behind a tree near the fountain
  2. Located in the wooded area right before the Griffin Gatehouse area
  3. Located on island in the pool of water before entering The Abandoned Mine
  4. Located behind a tree in a copse right outside Village of Loneraven
  5. Located behind rock in the north of Village of Loneraven

Secrets[edit]

Official[edit]

  1. When you're in front of the portal to Griffin Gatehouse, check behind the portal itself for a mystic urn. (thing 1457)
  2. Go to the bottom of the well in the village of Loneraven for another mystic urn. (thing 3143)
  3. At the entrance to the forest, jump into the river and take the left fork around the rock in the middle. Ride the river over the edge, and you'll land on an invisible platform. Jump across to the next invisible platform, then jump across to the metal support where you can find yet another mystic urn. (thing 3346) Use a torch if you're having a hard time seeing it.

Non-official[edit]

  • A secret troll doll can be found under the bridge at the entrance from the Stinkstump Swamp. Jump into the river and, while passing under the bridge, you can grab the doll out of an alcove. (thing 4377)
