Freakmapping (also known as the Tuning Contest) is a series of community projects organized by members of the Russian Doom community on the Doom Power forum. Freakmapping #1, the first entry in the series, was held in the summer of 2005, and eight more competitions were held in subsequent years.

Concept[edit]

The goal of the project is to modify the level created by the SLIGE or later OBLIGE random level generators for Doom II IWAD. Each mapper creates their own version of the level. The time limit is about 2-3 weeks. The community then votes on the best level, choosing the winner.

The name of the project comes from its goal - to turn an ugly software-generated level into something strange and unusual, something freak.

The idea of tuning up auto generated levels existed before Freakmapping. On October 20, 2003, Owen Lloyd (Sarge Baldy) started the "slige modification contest" on Doomworld forums.[1] However the resulting compilation was rejected from the /idgames archive due to the usage of SLIGE. Sarge Baldy tried to dispute this, because levels were highly modified, but the results are unknown. The archive with the results of the contest was lost. One of the levels, designed by Ian Cunnings (The Flange Peddler), was later re-released as MAP03 of Community Chest 2.
