Freudian Slipgate 2 is a 32-level Doom II megawad for Boom-compatible source ports, created by Przemek Zimny (Alter). The sequel to Alter's Freudian Slipgate, it was first announced on January 28, 2016, shortly after the original was uploaded to the idgames archive. After being shelved for several years, work on the project began again around 2020, leading to a full release on February 14, 2024, with the final version being uploaded to the idgames archive on June 29, 2024.

The mapset is framed as Doomguy's psychiatric session with Dr. Albert Fonzo, with levels being structured into three episodes, each preceded by a brief intermission map with no combat.

The soundtrack for the WAD is almost exclusively made up of tracks by James Paddock (Jimmy), who according to a statement by Alter in the original development thread also inspired the project as a whole; however, the soundtrack does not include any bespoke tracks.

Freudian Slipgate 2 received an honorable mention at the 2024 Cacowards.

Content[edit]

Custom content[edit]

Freudian Slipgate 2 makes use of an embedded DeHackEd patch for changes to map objects. It also includes a MAPINFO lump to define episodes. The TITLEPIC lump was created for the project by Fuzzball, with James Caldwell (Obsidian) providing the M_DOOM, status bar and CREDIT graphics, while uber made the INTERPIC and BOSSBACK lumps.

The shooting animations of the pistol, shotgun, and chaingun have all been moderately sped up, giving them an increased rate of fire.

Most monsters utilize sprite replacements from the Realm 667 repository but many have only minor changes made to their behavior.

Dark variant monsters
The demon, mancubus, Hell knight, and cyberdemon all use a similar ash-colored sprite set, with the cyberdemon also renamed to dark cyberdemon. Both the Hell knight and mancubus are completely unchanged otherwise, apart from their projectiles being recolored, while the demon and cyberdemon have their step size increased by 10% and 12.5%, respectively, making them close in slightly faster on their targets.
Imp
The imp is given a cybernetic right arm, with the only other change being that its attack animation has been slightly sped up.
Pain elemental & lost soul
The pain elemental and lost soul have no changes made to them apart from the modifications to their sprites, which focus on a green color theme.
Cacodemon
The cacodemon received a substantial visual overhaul, using the sprite set of the Hades Elemental. Its health is also reduced to 350 HP and its movement speed increased by 50%.
Arachnotron
The arachnotron fires a burst of four plasma projectiles, rather than a constant stream, with a short gap between bursts.
Baron of Hell
The baron of Hell is given the most drastic sprite change of all monsters, using that of the Terminator, a large hulking cyborg that bears little resemblance to a Hell noble. Somewhat ironically, there are no changes made to its behavior, attacks, or sounds, and the only difference to a regular baron, apart from the visuals, is its health being reduced to 800 HP.
Spider mastermind
The spider mastermind fires off two parallel streams of mancubus projectiles instead of its regular chaingun fire, and has two cannons added to its sprite along with a third eye.
BIG JIMMY
The final boss of the WAD is a robot with a large TV set for a face, two cannon arms, and dinosaur-like legs and tail. It has 10000 HP and uses two different attacks: the first one is part of its walk sequence and sees it fire off three revenant missiles in quick succession. The second one, its ranged attack, starts off with five arachnotron projectiles followed by a short pause before transitioning to the spidermaster mind's hitscan attack. It has the same pain chance as the cyberdemon (circa 8%) and will end the level once it dies, using the A_BrainDie code pointer taken from Romero's head.
