Hellgate

From DoomWiki.org

Hellgate is a Doom clone for the Atari ST released in 1996 by SmartSOFT, with designer David Walters saying it was "inspired by my love of Doom."[1] While the game runs at a lower framerate than rival releases on the platform,[2][3] such as the seminal solid coloured MIDI Maze, Gouraud-shaded Substation and the texture mapped Destruction Imminent, the game has the distinction of being written in the high-level STOS BASIC albeit using the STOS 3D extension.[4]

All of these games are on a fixed height level, as with Wolfenstein 3D, which was also later ported to the platform.[5] The logo, status bar, player face and weapon load-out in Hellgate are clearly derived from those of Doom, but with the game set on Neptune rather than Mars or its moons, and robots as opponents.[6] The game also has Doom style skill levels, intermission screens, secret areas and powerups.[7]

The source code to the game was released in 2022.[8] The game can be run on PCs using emulators like STEEm.[9] A more complete Doom-like is being developed called Grind for the Amiga, with support also being worked on for the Sega Genesis and Atari ST.
