Badlands is one of the four offshoot maps accessed from Blight in the first hub of Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. It uses one of the following music tracks composed by Kevin Schilder: "Fubas" (default) or "Falcon" (played from the game CD).

Kill the brown chaos serpents in front of you, then climb the wooden steps to lower two narrow pillars and step into a room with a large metal block, which is guarded by dark bishops. Go through either of the eastern doors to enter a corridor with centaurs (and slaughtaurs on medium and hard skill levels), then run all the way east, noting the fireball launcher that activates behind you, and make a running jump at the end to reach the brown rocks in the middle of the swamp. Go to the south-east corner of the rocks, which has a sitting corpse, and look down to see a set of steps going down, then carefully follow these steps to find a slaughtaur guarding a Krater of Might and a minotaur switch that you need to pull.

Drop into the swamp below and fight through some stalkers to a lift in the south-west area, which goes up to the corridor with the fireball launcher, then return to the room with the metal block to find that it has opened to reveal a bell. Strike the bell with any weapon to collapse the south wall and reveal a hole, drop down it then walk east until you reach another fireball launcher. Wait for the fireballs to stop, then duck into the doorway south of the launcher (it will fire again as you do so) to enter a room with one or two brown serpents, then enter the teleporter at the south end to go to a brick enclosure. Press any of the surrounding walls to drop them and reveal a courtyard containing more brown serpents as well as some spikes, then run to the archway on the east side and go round a corner to find a pair of silver doors, which open automatically as you approach. Watch out for a third fireball launcher that activates behind you when you reach the doors.

The doors lead to a ledge on the north side of the swamp holding a falcon shield; glitter bridges will also appear leading to the brown rock formation. Step across to those rocks and kill any waiting chaos serpents, then go to the minotaur brazier in the center to see a wooden lift moving up and down, which you can ride up to an emerald planet. After taking the gem, return to the starting point and enter the portal here to go back to Blight.

Other points of interest[edit]

If you are playing as the Mage, go to the east end of the corridor with the fireball launcher but do not jump to the brown rocks yet. Instead, go north and west along a ledge to find the second piece of the Bloodscourge.

In the south-east corner of the brown rock formation, above the steps leading to the minotaur switch, is a sitting corpse. Jump on top of it to climb up to a ledge with an Icon of the Defender.

In the south, there is a portal to Brackenwood if you have the emerald key. Using this portal to visit Brackenwood for the first time offers no benefit. However, traveling into this map from the other side allows you to skip the bell puzzle on this map.

In the east, there is an exit to Catacomb if you have the cave key. This gate provides an alternate entrance, near the lavafall with the fourth Flame Mask.

  • Linedefs 283, 286, and 288 are missing an upper texture on the back sidedef. This causes a slight distortion on the inside of the chapel, looking out the north-east window.
  • Linedefs 512, 513, and 968 are missing an upper texture on the front sidedef. The effects are only visible if using Wings of Wrath.
  • Linedef 778 has a missing upper texture on the back sidedef.
