Ordeal is one of the offshoot maps from Constable's Gate in the second hub of Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. It uses one of the following music tracks composed by Kevin Schilder: "Stalk" (default) or "Bones" (played from the game CD).

This level requires two visits, one to pick up the final Yorick's Skull, and a second to unlock the portal to Treasury.

Yorick's Skull[edit]

Go down the steps, which will lower a wall behind you and release a pack of ettins, then go round the corner to face an ice shooter and two rows of dormant dark bishops; the bishops will awaken as you pass them. Past the bishops is a narrow ledge with some blue mana on it, but as you move across the ledge another ice shooter will fire at you; the shots cannot be avoided, but can be deflected with Discs of Repulsion if you have them. At the other end of the ledge, jump east to a corridor with two doors and go through the eastern door to enter a hall with dark bishops (and ettins if you are playing as the Fighter), as well as the portal back to Constable's Gate.

Go up both of the southern staircases in the hall and pull the minotaur switches at the top of each one, then go up the northern staircases and walk east to find a third minotaur switch (also note the castle key door between two of the staircases as you will need to open it later). Pulling all three switches will open a recess behind the portal containing the third Yorick's Skull, as well as summoning more bishops; after taking the Skull, enter the portal to go back to Constable's Gate.

Treasury portal[edit]

After returning with the castle key from Locus Requiescat, go back to the Constable's Gate portal room and go up the northern staircases to reach the castle key door. Open the door and press the moon switch behind it, then go back to the previous corridor to find that the gold door has opened to reveal a hallway with three lava pits and fireball launchers. Run past the launchers to a columned hall with some green chaos serpents, arm yourself then press the moon switch on the east wall next to the water pool; this will remove the statue blocking the portal on the opposite side, but will cause monsters to teleport in. Fight your way through to the portal to go to Treasury.

Other points of interest[edit]

From the start, break either of the stained-glass windows at the first corner to enter a room with quartz flasks. There are four openings in the north and east walls that you can reach by climbing on the sitting corpses, where you will find a room with many reivers and an Icon of the Defender.

Just west of the gold door is a step with a pool of blood on it. Open the wall behind the blood to find two crystal vials; you can also snipe two afrits through a window, so you do not have to deal with them when running past the fireball launchers.

In the room with the Constable's Gate portal, go up the northern stairs to see a Dark Servant in a pool of water. Entering the pool causes a fast-moving crusher to drop on you, and the sides of the pool are too high to walk out of, so to avoid being killed you must run into the pool and immediately jump out. Make sure you have full health before attempting this.


  • Linedef 297 (just behind the gold door leading to Treasury) is missing an upper texture. This is noticeable, especially if revisiting the level with Wings of Wrath.
