Abattoir is one of the offshoot maps from Nave in the third hub of Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. It uses one of the following music tracks composed by Kevin Schilder: "Rithm" (default) or "Fantasy" (played from the game CD).

This level requires two visits, one to obtain the bronze gear, and another to get the Sigil of the Magus after using the gear.

Bronze gear[edit]

Open the door in front of you and go straight forward until you enter a room with a lava pool and some afrits; you can see the bronze gear on top of a pillar in the lava. Go round to the south-west corner to find a lift that goes down to a dark room with stalkers, then walk through the opening in the south wall to drop into a pool with a stalker boss. Enter the teleporter in this room to go to the pillar with the gear, then return to the starting room and enter the portal on the south side to return to Nave.

Sigil of the Magus[edit]

Back in Nave, place the gear in the mechanism closest to the Abbatoir portal, then return to this level; a tall bridge has risen in the lava room which leads to a moon switch that you need to press. Go into the corridor leading to the lava and head forward until you reach a square with a flickering light, then open the walls on either side to reveal two staircases, though the south one is currently blocked. Go up the north staircase then head west and north to a step with a moon switch and press it to unblock the south staircase; after pressing the switch, wait a moment to dodge a crusher trap that drops behind you.

Go back to the south staircase and climb it, then head west along a passage until you get to a wider corridor with some alcoves that hold crystal vials. Go round the corner to face a few ettins, then enter the next room to open three compartments with more ettins; if you run to the east wall you will reach two moon switches, and can press the left-hand one repeatedly to drop crushers on the compartment entrances. Once the room is clear, press the right-hand switch then go back to the previous room, past three crushers that move at different speeds, to find that several more ettins have been released along with a Banishment Device. Go to the now-open door in the north-east corner to reach the tall bridge you raised using the gear and cross it to reach the moon switch, which will open a door near the starting point.

Go back to the starting point and pass through the north door. The next room contains different monsters depending on class: ettins for the Fighter, dark bishops for the Cleric, and afrits for the Mage. Go to the north-west end of the room, then continue west through a chamber with a few ettins to enter a large hall with more ettins as well as reivers and stalkers. Step across the sludge stream to reach the south side of the room, then go to the stone column here to drop down a hole (you will take some falling damage) and land on another stalker and a platinum helm. Press the moon switch in the hole to raise the sludge so you can climb out, then go to the south wall and open the section with a blood pool in front of it (a flickering light will indicate the correct place) to find a Chaos Device and drop into the stalker pit near the lava room. Press the moon switch on the east wall to lower the lift that goes up to the lava room, where the bars on the south side have opened to reveal another teleporter, which goes to the Sigil of the Magus as well as a portal to Dark Watch.

As soon as the level starts, open the wall behind you between two torches to find four quartz flasks.
