Ian Mapleson
From DoomWiki.org
Ian Mapleson is an author and webmaster who was an early anchor of the Doom community from its inception in 1993 up to 1999.
Community activities[edit]
Ian is best known for founding and maintaining the Doom Help Service, a period collection of FAQs, guides and utility downloads, which launched out of the Usenet groups in 1994. The project also spawned a website at Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, which—after several service interruptions—moved to gamers.org in 1996. Besides collecting numerous documents from other community members, he authored a sizable number of the DHS documents himself.
He created the alt.games.doom.newplayers group, and was a member of the RGCD Support Team as well as the volunteer coordinator of the rec.games.computer.doom.help group.
Trivia[edit]
During the 1990s, Ian became an avid user of Silicon Graphics workstations at Heriot Watt University, and worked as system administrator of a SGI network at University of Central Lancashire. He played Doom on a SGI computer rather than a PC, and part of his dissertation concerns the side effects of playing Doom.
