Incinerator

From DoomWiki.org

An incinerator in the player's hands and as a pickup lying on the ground.

The incinerator is a flamethrower, which projects lasting flames. It shares the player's stock of fuel with the calamity blade as a source of ammo.

The incinerator first appears in MAP15: Ash Mill, the secret level of episode The Vulcan Abyss of Legacy of Rust, and its first appearance in a standard level is in MAP04: Descending Inferno. When picked up, it contains the equivalent ammo of 2 cans (totalling 20 units of fuel, or 40 on the "I'm too young to die" and "Nightmare!" skill levels).

Combat characteristics[edit]

Each flame burst inflicts 5-40 points of damage. In addition, upon impact, the flames will keep burning for 44 tics, inflicting 5 splash damage in a radius of 64 map units at the moment of impact, and then five more times every six tics.

The rate of continuous fire is one burst every 3 tics (about 0.086 seconds).

Tactical analysis[edit]

Like the plasma gun, the incinerator's high rate of fire is devastating against almost any single opponent as well as crowds of smaller enemies. Continuous fire will stunlock most monsters, including the arch-vile and vassago, thanks to the combination of rapid-fire flame bursts and lingering flames, leaving them unable to move or fight back. While the flame bursts inflict the same amount of damage as plasma projectiles, the incinerator can inflict more damage overall thanks to the burning flames it leaves behind. The incinerator is effective at close to medium range, but using it at point-blank range is not recommended as the flames will also damage players that are standing too close to them.

Trivia[edit]

  • Killing 30 arachnoid enemies with the incinerator, such as the mindweaver and spiderdemon, is required to complete the "Kill It With Fire" achievement.
  • The incinerator is based on an unused raw capture of an unknown weapon, seen in the id Vault.
