Lastermaul (or Lästermaul) is a project to create a free and open-source replacement IWAD for Hexen. It intends to be the Hexen equivalent of Freedoom, Blasphemer, and Animosity.

While there was already a project with a similar goal called Zauberer, Lastermaul has a different theme and a connection to Blasphemer. At the moment, some textures from Zauberer are used as placeholders.

The title of the project is German for Blasphemer, similar to how Hexen is German for witches.

History[edit]

Development started based on a merger of Blasphemer and Zauberer by Catoptromancy, with GeorgePieVG starting a GitHub repository on August 11, 2024.

On August 13, 2024, GeorgePieVG announced[1] in the Zauberer thread on Doomworld that a continuation of Catoptromancy's project was underway, followed by a dedicated Lastermaul thread on August 26, 2024.

Monsters[edit]

  • The afrit has been replaced with a harpy from Blasphemer, but recolored black and with red glowing eyes.
  • The ettin has been replaced with a grey cloaked ghoul. The same as in Blasphemer.
  • The centaur has been replaced with a gremlin, the former replacement for the revenant from Freedoom and the undead warrior from Blasphemer.
  • The chaos serpent has been replaced with a saurian monster from Blasphemer.
  • The dark bishop has been replaced with a floating brain with teeth and tentacles named grell. The same as disciple replacement from Blasphemer.
  • The death wyvern has been replaced with the fallen from Demon Eclipse.
  • The heresiarch has been replaced with a witch originally created as a replacement for the iron lich from Blasphemer.
  • The stalker has been replaced by a green goo monster, the former baron of Hell replacement from Freedoom.
  • The reiver has been replaced by a nightshade from Demon Eclipse.
  • Korax has no replacement yet and uses the generic placeholder.
