Liminal Doom 2: Crossing The Threshold is a PWAD for Doom II that requires an MBF21-compatible source port, consisting of five main maps, three outro maps, and two bonus levels. It was created by dashlet and first released on the Doomworld forums on May 22, 2024, with the final version uploaded to the idgames archive on July 5, 2024. The mapset is a sequel to Liminal Doom, a collaboration between dashlet and their friend Lhyntel released in September 2022, and was originally planned to be another collaborative effort between the pair before transitioning to a solo effort.

Levels are build around the aesthetics of liminal spaces, contrasting design elements of mundane life with abstract surreality in an effort to evoke a dreamlike atmosphere mixed with eerie foreboding. Level progression is often non-linear and the gameplay oscillates between high-pitched combat and quiet exploration, including puzzles and platforming.

Liminal Doom 2: Crossing The Threshold was named one of the winners at the 2024 Cacowards.

Custom content[edit]

Liminal Doom 2 makes use of an embedded DeHackEd patch to modify several map objects in the game. Besides the changes to the bestiary listed below, the patch also adds a secondary, green soul sphere, changes the names of several keys and decorations, and replaces the radiation suit with the revealing sphere, which removes the green haze effect but has no direct gameplay purpose—instead the player triggers a linedef on their way to picking it up which will highlight and unlock several walls in the level. Furthermore, both Commander Keen and the Wolfenstein SS are turned into immobile sound sources named radio ambience and The Show, respectively; the former is hidden out of bounds and plays garbled radio static, while the latter uses the sprite of an old record player and triggers several sectors through calling A_LineEffect while playing a MIDI rendition of "Lullaby of the Leaves" by Bernice Petkere.

Shadow
A blackish, translucent imp-like creature with 150 HP. It moves twice as fast as a demon and fires off a burst of four red energy projectiles, pausing for about half a second before and after the attack. It replaces Romero's head.
Arachnotron
The arachnotron has its projectile attack replaced with the hitscan attack of the spider mastermind, while its radius is also reduced from 64 to 40 map units, making it easier for it to maneuver around in narrow environments.
Lesser cyberdemon
A cyberdemon with 1500 HP and dark grey wiring to distinguish it from its regular counterpart. It replaces the spider mastermind.
