This article is a list of known commercial compilations of PWADs, shareware programs, level editors, and other utilities, which were popular in the early to mid-1990's as a result of the scarcity and cost of home Internet connections. Some of the more notable of these collections have their own articles which are linked by the compilation's name. Many of these discs can be downloaded from the Internet (see the links below). A gallery of cover art and media for these and other items can be found at shovelware cover art.

Explanation[edit]

  • No. PWADs: This may be an approximation or a number created by the publisher for marketing purposes. The actual number of PWAD files and levels may vary significantly.
  • Extras: Known to include level editors, other utilities, custom graphics or sounds, FAQs and editing guides, and other bonuses.
  • Exclusives: Known to include exclusive content (PWADs, IWADs, or game resources) created by or for the publisher.
  • Shareware: Known to include the shareware version of Doom or Heretic.

  1. ↑ Shareware game compilation that includes directories dedicated to Doom & Doom II PWADs, Heretic & Hexen PWADs, and also contains the shareware edition of Heretic.
  2. ↑ Shareware disc focused on 3D games. Includes both v1.2 and v1.666 of shareware Doom, and also an unauthorized IWAD hack using Wolfenstein 3-D sprites and sounds.
  3. ↑ Shareware disc with 12 action games including shareware Doom v1.2. The Doom section also includes the Doom FAQ and a selection of PWADs and utilities.
  4. ↑ Collection of various game shareware, info and add-on files targeted to BBS operators. Includes dedicated Doom and Doom 2 directories as well as a scattering of Doom and Heretic related files in the DOS games directories.
  5. ↑ Two-CD compilation with Doom PWADs on the first disc and the Doom 2 PWADs on the second. Many of the Doom 2 levels are conversions.
  6. ↑ 6.0 6.1 The Laser Magic Doom Companion Edition is an alternate, later version of Limelight Media's Doom Companion CD-ROM. Slight updates were made to the frontend and the readme text files but the contents were otherwise not changed.
  7. ↑ Also published as Hank Leukart's Hacker's Guide to Doom.
  8. ↑ Some executables on the Doom II Mania disc are infected with the Tai-Pan.666 / Doom2Death virus.
  9. ↑ H!ZONE includes twelve custom exclusive episodes.

  15. ↑ Contains some WADs for the original Doom, but the launcher supports Doom II only and will attempt to convert them before play.
  16. ↑ Interface software developed by Head Games.
  17. ↑ Variety pack of game add-ons. Non-Doom-engine games featured include Descent 1 & 2, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake and Warcraft 2.
  18. ↑ Also features add-ons for Quake and Duke Nukem 3D.
  19. ↑ A re-release of Deathday with trivial changes to the CD-ROM's contents; play-wise they are identical.
  20. ↑ Not to be confused with the much more common Doom Companion Edition from Laser Magic. There are two versions of the jewel case front insert illustration, one shows the official DOOM logo and a cacodemon flanked by two demons; the other says "DOOM" in a different font with a larger scene of a spaceship. The CD-ROM contents are 100% identical in both versions. There is also a folder titled "heretic" that includes not only Heretic files, but also ones related to Wolfenstein 3-D, Descent and Rise of the Triad.
  21. ↑ A sampler disc containing a reduced selection of PWADs from D!ZONE and a reduced selection of files for SimCity 2000 from S!ZONE.
