Essentials[edit]

This map is a hub that connects to all the maps in this WAD, except for MAP01: Pit of Sorrows.

  • First visit: You will be greeted by an image of Korax; once it disappears, drop down to the ground and walk round the brown column in front of you before walking north through a gap in the fence. Turn right at this point and head straight forward to see a portal in front of you leading to MAP03: The Cursed Village. Collect the rusted key in this map.
  • Second visit: On returning from The Cursed Village, you will see steps rising on your left - go up them to find another portal leading to MAP04: Castle Klattakus.
  • Third visit: Finding and pulling the chain switch in Castle Klattakus will lower a barrier in front of you when you return to the hub; climb the steps behind it to reach the portal to MAP05: Frozen Sands.
  • Fourth visit: After finding and pulling the chain switch in Frozen Sands, return to the hub and head north to a now-open building. As soon as you enter, turn right to see a portal to MAP06: Athenaeum.
  • Fifth visit: Pulling the chain switch in Athenaeum will open the hedge maze on the west side of the hub. Enter it to find (depending on player class) the Hammer of Retribution, firestorm or Arc of Death, then proceed west to the portal to MAP07: Sanctuary of the Damned. Collect the first clock gear in this map.
  • Sixth visit: Go to the north-east corner of the hedge maze to find the portal to MAP08: Grisly Gorge.
  • Seventh visit: Pulling the chain switch in Grisly Gorge will allow you to reach the portal to MAP10: The Stagnum Ignis, but do not go there yet - instead, go to the west side of the hedge maze to find a cavern and run through it to find a minotaur switch (if you walk then the cavern walls will close in and crush you). Pulling this switch will lower two brass barriers, allowing you to reach the portal to MAP11: Shattered Valley in the north-west corner of the hedge maze. Collect the horn key in this map.
  • Eighth visit: Leave the hedge maze and go to the elaborate structure north of it; the chain switch you pulled in Grisly Gorge has lowered the barriers in front of the staircases, letting you reach the portal to The Stagnum Ignis. Collect the second clock gear in this level.
  • Ninth visit: Go back to ground level and head north until you reach a pit. There are two clockwork mechanisms here that you can insert the gears into - doing so will cause a crusher to land on a succession of caged ettins, and their spirits will transform into glitter bridges that you can use to cross the pit. Open a brass door at the top to find yourself in a maze of fire walls, then fight your way to the chain switches on the east and west sides of the maze; pulling both switches will lower a wall at the center of the maze, revealing a "sky tunnel" leading to MAP18: Arena.

Other points of interest[edit]

Completing Athenaeum will also lower a barrier inside the east building, letting you climb a staircase up to the portal to MAP09: Abandoned Observatory. This map is not required to finish the game, but if you choose to enter it then you will need to complete the map to escape.
