MAP02: Sanguine Wastes is the second map in episode The Vulcan Abyss of Legacy of Rust. It was designed by Xaser Acheron and uses the music track "The Shores Of Heaven," also by Xaser.

Walkthrough[edit]

Essentials[edit]

Take the shotgun in front of you if you need it (doing so releases ghouls from the nearby walls), then head north until you pass under a pair of gray structures—two alcoves containing demons/spectres (and revenants on Hurt Me Plenty skill level or higher) will open at either end of the second structure. Flip a switch inside either alcove, then continue north and east to an open area with several bloodfalls. Go to the island in the center and collect the rocket launcher and rockets, which will release packs of demons, revenants and ghouls into the area along with some cacodemons that teleport to the tops of the falls; use the columns that rise from the blood to give you cover. Go to the south-east end of the blood pool to enter a dark cavern, then cross the platforms one by one using the bridges that rise from the nukage below. After crossing the last bridge, follow the path north and east to enter the main building.

As you enter the facility, you will see a pair of buttons in front of you that will raise a section of pipe directly ahead. Go north from here to a triangular plinth with a partial invisibility, then go up the nearby steps to a second pair of buttons and use them to lower a section of the pipe running through the center of this room; this will become important later. Now step through the pipes to the east side of the room to find a pair of staircases, then take the upward staircase to enter a room with a red star (which holds a megasphere on I'm Too Young to Die and Hey Not Too Rough). Approach the star to open the tank ahead and reveal a banshee, then enter that tank to open the remaining tanks, which hold more banshees, as well as the western wall which hides imps (or a revenant on Ultra-Violence and Nightmare). Go through this wall to find steps leading down to a third pair of buttons, which you can use to raise another section of pipe, then go back to the buttons on the west side of the room and use them to raise the first pipe again. Now go around the west side of the nearby nukage pool to a switch and use it to raise stairs that will get you on top of the pipes. (You can only climb on the pipes from this side of the room, so it is important to be on the west side when you raise the final section of pipe.)

Dispose of the imps that teleport in, then follow the trail of health bonuses along the pipe, go down some steps and make a running leap to the walkway near the facility entrance. Continue following the health bonuses along another pipe, noting the banshees and ghouls that are released on either side, then climb the stairs at the end of the pipe to a door that leads to the facility roof. Press the button behind the door to raise some stairs to your left (along with more stairs that connect to the facility entrance), then climb the stairs and press the skull switch at the top—you will see the bloodfalls lower. Go back down to the blood pool and open the circular door that was hidden behind one of the bloodfalls, then follow the path through a second door and flip the switch at the north end to go to MAP03: Spirit Drains.

Secret exit[edit]

Go to secret #7 and open the door here using the red keycard from secret #6 to enter a room with five red compartments, then enter the second compartment from the right to teleport to a hidden switch and flip it to lower a large pipe at the north end of the facility. Go back into the facility and ride the lift that was hidden behind the pipe up, then go straight forward through an exit door to reach the secret exit to MAP15: Ash Mill.

Other points of interest[edit]

After getting on the ledge at the north end of the facility, go to the east end and flip the switch here to lower the supercharge inside the nearby nukage pool.

Secrets[edit]

  1. In the bloodfall area, go to the pipes at the east end and go behind the easternmost pipe for a berserk pack. (sector 681)
  2. After opening all the tanks in the red star room, walk through the fire wall at the back of the north-west tank to find stairs leading up to a supercharge. (sector 518) Watch out for the ghouls that are released behind you as you exit the secret.
  3. After opening all the tanks in the red star room, walk through the fire wall at the back of the south-east tank to drop down to a dark staircase. Open the wall at the top of the stairs to find chaingunners guarding two rockets and a backpack. (sector 501)
  4. After raising all the sections of pipe, walk along them until you go down some steps. Go north-east at this point and run across a pair of pipes to a wall with a skull, which you can open to find a berserk pack. (sector 473)
  5. On either side of the staircase leading up to the roof are two walls with green slime on them. Press both walls to lower them and reveal two buttons, then press the buttons to raise steps up to the computer area map just south of the stairs. (sector 943)
  6. Go to the upper level of the roof and go behind the south-western block to find a button. Press it, then go back down to the blood pool and go to the south-east end, where some rocks have lowered to reveal a hole in the wall, which leads to a cavern with hanging corpses. Follow the staircase here up to the red key. (sector 788)
  7. From the upper level of the roof, walk round the south-east corner of the brown railing to land in a dirt area with trees. (sector 1)
  8. In secret #7, go to the lone health bonus at the east end and step past the small tree here to find a red door, which is the secret. (sector 953) The second red compartment from the right is a hidden teleporter to the switch that opens the secret exit.
