MAP03: Digging for Slag is the third map of The Box of a Thousand Demons. It was designed by Thelokk and uses the music track "Dungeon" from Castlevania 64.

Walkthrough[edit]

Essentials[edit]

Grab the machine gun, armor and ammo before descending the rocky staircase in front of you, leading into a very large, lava-filled cave. Four sergeants guard a rocket launcher: attacking them will cause a horde of revenants to pour into the arena from two side alcoves to the north and the south. Dispatch them, then explore the two alcoves: each one has a switch that needs to be pressed, in order to lower one of the two walls obstructing passage to the next section of the map, to the east of the main arena. It is advisable to revisit the main arena itself after each switch, as with every wall lowered a new ambush of cacodemons and pain elementals will occur.

Proceed to the raised techbase dais to the east, guarded by imps, demons and chaingunners. There will be inactive arch-viles to the north and the south, the former guarding a temporarily inaccessible yellow key, and a switch on the easternmost wall: activating this switch will grant access to the key, but also release the arch-viles into the main arena. It is advisable to quickly backtrack, in order to prevent excessive resurrecting.

The yellow key grants access to a door in the northern alcove: behind it lies an ambush of demons plus an arch-vile, and the final lift which will take you to the exit switch.

Secrets[edit]

  1. Use the blue pentagram west of the start to lower the wall behind you, which has a backpack. (sector 32)
  2. At the northwest room with the revenants, head to the flashing monitor to the east and use it to lower a nearby lift. Ride up and maneuver to the berserk pack to the west. (sector 279)
  3. In the central cave, lower all of the yellow walls. Head to the south area and to the southwest will be a soul sphere. (sector 425)
