MAP05: Respawning Vats is the fifth map of Doom 2's Consumed Earth. It was designed by Ilya Lazarev (joe-ilya) and uses the music track "Read Me While Listening to This" by Robert Prince.

Walkthrough[edit]

Essentials[edit]

Kill the zombiemen in front of you then go through the doorway to get a shotgun and super shotgun, and enter a courtyard with a chaingun and armor. Go through the eastern doorway and kill one or two cacodemons waiting around the corner, go down the steps to deal with one or two mancubi then go south-east into a room with Hell knights and red walls. Wind your way through the red walls to reach a button in the north-east corner, kill the cacodemon that is released then press the button to lower a wall blocking the path to the blue key. Go back to the courtyard and pass through either of the open doors on the west side, kill a waiting knight then run west to a block with a rocket launcher which overlooks a second courtyard. Drop into the courtyard and kill any waiting enemies, including an arch-vile on a small island, then go west into a corridor with blood pools and follow this north to a set of steps. Run up the steps to reach the ledge with the blue keycard.

From the blue key, head north into a third courtyard then continue north into a building with some pipe blocks. Climb the steps at the west end and press the button at the top to open an alcove with a revenant (and spectre on Hurt Me Plenty skill level or higher), then press a second button at the back of the alcove to open a barricade outside and release one or two chaingunners behind you. Go back to the northern courtyard and pass through the gray archway on the east side, deal with a waiting knight, then go east to an immobile arch-vile and south-west to drop down a hole to a red cave. Go down the steps to a yellow bridge over a lava pit, cross it then follow the path until you reach a junction guarded by a mancubus. Shoot the blue skull switch behind the mancubus to lower the pillar holding the yellow keycard, then run west to collect the key.

Go back to the cave entrance and enter the white teleporter here to return to the surface, then return to the western courtyard and look south to see three fenced paths—the left-hand path is blocked with a yellow bar but you should ignore it for now. Take the middle path for now and turn right (west) at the junction to enter a room with silver blocks, then go to the steps at the east end of the room and deal with a revenant waiting near the bottom. Climb the steps and follow the passage south until you reach a sludge pool, then continue going north and west past an arch-vile until you reach the end of the ledge. Step north-west to a slightly higher ledge with some imps and go to the switch at the north end to lower the wall, revealing a demon and one to three cacodemons, then flip the switch behind the wall to open the red key room. Go back to the yellow bar you passed earlier and open it, follow the path behind it east to a room with imps, then press the button on the south wall to open the bars in front of the red keycard so you can collect it. Go back to the ledge where you found the blue key and press the button just north of it to reveal one or two revenants, then walk through the doorway indicated by the floor arrow to end the level.

Secrets[edit]

  1. At the south-east end, find the section on the west wall with a red brick at its base. Head a bit south and use the gargoyle switch in the middle to open that part of the wall to find an energy cell pack and a plasma gun. (sector 469)
  2. In the west courtyard, you will find a partial invisibility in the middle. You can get to it by straferunning west across the large block with the rocket launcher. (sector 31)
  3. At the westernmost end, look north at the wall near the shotgun guy cage and use it. Head to the blue key and you can get an armor nearby. (sector 466)
  4. At the northern courtyard, head to the dark "X" mark on the ground and quickly run back to the south room, then behind the column to the right to get an invulnerability. (sector 463)
  5. At the north-west end where the blue switch is, lower the brown northern wall at the top of the steps to find ten health bonuses. (sector 467)
  6. On the bridge going over lava in the red cave, head to the east side and drop to the east to land on a berserk pack. (sector 465)
