Essentials[edit]

This map is very similar to the original Quake start map. You get to choose the skill level and then the episode. Except that this time, skill levels don't change the current game skill level and you only get to choose to start the next map from the Episode 3 path. The other paths act like Credits, thanking the player for playing and awaiting them in the future episodes of the entire trilogy.

Because of how the previous map ended, the player will arrive this map in a poor state, assuming a continuous playthrough. The skill portals do not change the skill level. Instead, depending of the chosen skill level, they will supply the player with health/armor or nothing at all.

The easy portal gives the player a megasphere, the normal portal gives the player 100% health and green armor and the hard portal gives the player nothing to start the next level with. If the player cares about getting 100% items, they can choose the easy portal and they will be given a megasphere through voodoo-doll trickery, which also allows starting the next level in the best state possible, without affecting the current skill level chosen.
