MAP07: Sanctuary of the Damned is the seventh map of Hexen Upstart Mapping Project. It was designed by Manhs and uses the music track "Fantasy" by Kevin Schilder.

Walkthrough[edit]

Essentials[edit]

Turn left as the level starts and follow the black path round to another junction, then head west towards an ettin and green chaos serpent who are guarding a set of steps. Go down the steps to find two brown chaos serpents guarding three doors - the brass door is locked by two switches that are hidden nearby. Go through the north door to see three paths ahead, take the right-hand path then push past a slaughtaur (as well as fireballs coming through the window on your left) to reach a door at the end of the hall and open it to find a dark bishop guarding the first switch. Head back to where you faced the brown serpents, passing a crusher on the way, then go through the south door this time and follow the path down to a green serpent and two ettins guarding the second switch. Watch out for a centaur (and slaughtaur on medium and hard skill levels) being released behind you as you approach the switch.

Go back to the room with the brown serpents and pass through the now-open brass door, then head north and west around the church in front of you to find a tunnel leading into a brown cavern with ettins, centaurs and bishops. Follow the left-hand wall as it passes under a wooden beam, then look south to see more bishops guarding a moon switch - this will open the door to the church you passed earlier. Head back to the church and go round to its south side to find steps leading up to the door, go inside and kill all the bishops then look behind the altar to find a face switch; when you press it you will be told that the door to the village has opened. Go back to the starting point and follow the black path east to some curved steps that lead down to a large hall with green serpents, ettins and afrits - fight your way past them and go through the north or east doors to reach the village area.

Near the center of this area is the entrance to a hedge maze, flanked by two lit minotaur statues - go through it and head north past two planters, then turn left and left again before following the path past ettins and a slaughtaur to get the steel key. Now retrace your steps to the steps leading down to the brown serpents you fought earlier, then head south until you reach a curved staircase leading up to a hall with an orange floor. Head up the square steps to reach the ledge on the south side of the hall, then open the brass door behind the throne (requiring the steel key) to confront ettins and centaurs who are guarding a face switch. Press the switch then return to the hall to find that 16 bishops have been released; after killing all of them, go through either doorway on the east side of the hall, where a door has opened allowing you to collect the bronze gear (this will be used in the hub later).

Taking the gear will lower the floor; you will need to navigate several staircases and walkways while dodging poison dart traps and various enemies. The dart traps can be avoided by walking along the very edges of the walkways, but have healing items ready just in case. At the end of the path you will find a portal leading back to MAP02: Garden of Torture.

Non-official[edit]

  • In the area with the crusher, go down the east passage until you reach the point where fireballs are hitting the wall. You will see that the wall is slightly recessed - open it to find steps leading to a fléchette, a Crystal Vial, a Falcon Shield and a Quartz Flask.
  • In the area south of the crusher room, go down the stairs to the switch then open the mural on the north wall to get a Quartz Flask, a fléchette and an Amulet of Warding.
  • As soon as you enter the hedge maze in the village, turn right to see a brown serpent behind a low wall. If you look behind this wall you may spot a wooden arrow on the floor - open the wall it is pointing out to find a piece of (depending on player class) the Quietus, Wraithverge or Bloodscourge.
