MAP07: Shrine to the Dynamic Years (Athens Time Change Riots) is the seventh map of the second episode of Back to Saturn X. It was designed by Eric Baker (The Green Herring), who also composed the music track, "Free from My Shackles". In the official add-on version, this level's name is "A Cult Above".

Take the shotgun and kill the imps waiting on either side, then go down the staircases to a berserk pack which is guarded by imps, shotgun guys, demons and cacodemons. Open the east door to confront some more shotgun guys (and chaingunners on Ultra-Violence (UV) and Nightmare (NM) skill levels), then press the lift at the back of the room to lower it and reveal steps that go down to a water pool where cacodemons, demons, imps and zombies watch over a super shotgun. Open the north door and kill two more zombies, then step through (the door will close behind you) and slay one to three revenants that are released from a monster closet behind you before heading east past one or more Hell knights to another door. Open the door and dispatch one or two chaingunners ahead, then press the button in the south-east corner to raise some steps behind you; watch out for knights and revenants that teleport in as you do so.

Go up the steps and press another button at the top to lower the barricade blocking the south doorway, then go up some more steps behind it and kill a few zombies waiting at the top. Turn left to collect a rocket launcher, which will release cacodemons and zombies ahead and to your right, then follow the path south (passing two revenants on Hurt Me Plenty (HMP) or higher) and go round the corner to kill two chaingunners blocking your way to a door. Go through that door followed by a second door that opens as you approach, then go round the next corner (watch out for shotgun guys that are released behind you) to see a third door that leads to some ruins. Dispose of the revenants, imps and one or two mancubi on the overhead ledges, then go up the steps on the west side and run across the block in the center to reach the ledge on the north side. Head east up some more steps then run south across two pillars to a crucifix button, press it to raise a lift then run west across two more pillars to reach a second button; this will raise a platform next to the center block, allowing you to reach the large switch in the north-west corner (there is also a supercharge here on HMP or lower).

Pulling the switch will open the wall to your right and summon two or four pain elementals. Go through the wall and go up some steps to another door, open it to find yourself above the room east of the starting point, then turn right to press a button that will raise three square platforms leading over to a ledge on the opposite side. Cross to that ledge and turn right to confront some zombies and demons waiting around the next corner, then open the next door and go round another corner to face a knight - watch out for a crusher and a second knight behind you. Head west past a second crusher into a newly-revealed passage and slay four demons that are released to your right, then take the blue skull key and drop back into the starting area where some knights and revenants will teleport in. Open the locked north door and drop down a hole, ready to kill a pack of cacodemons and revenants that appear on the structure ahead (plus two arch-viles on UV and NM), then head round to the north side of the structure to find a plasma gun next to a switch. Pull the switch to raise steps on the south side of the structure, go up them and push past some more revenants and two more arch-viles to reach the exit teleporter on the top level.

Other points of interest[edit]


  1. In the north-eastern section of the map with the water floor, the monster closet with the revenants has a secret door behind a cracked rock wall. The passage behind it leads to a supercharge. (sector 367)
  2. In the ruins at the southern end of the map, once the dark grey platform has been raised, allowing access to the western-most platform, run westwards from the central pillar across this raised pillar and over the lowest section of the western wall next to the stairs. This allows access to an outdoor section where you can find a megaarmor. (sector 219)
