MAP09: Adverse Wind is the ninth map of the second episode of Back to Saturn X. It was designed by Adrian Hanekom (DeathevokatioN) and Sarah Mancuso (esselfortium), and uses the music track "Neighbouring Tribes," composed by Stuart Rynn (stewboy). In the official add-on version, this level's name is Bonsai Nightmare.

Essentials[edit]

Collect the chaingun and megaarmor (or armor on Ultra-Violence (UV) and Nightmare (NM) skill levels), noting a few imps that are released to your right, then head up the steps on your left and push past some shotgun guys and chaingunners to reach a crucifix button. Press the button to reveal two zombies and a Hell knight (which will teleport behind you) guarding another button, which will open the pentagram door behind you, then go through and collect a super shotgun before stepping forward and disposing of cacodemons and spectres that teleport in. Follow the blood pool past some zombies to a grassy area with imps, cacodemons and lost souls, activate the lift in the south-east corner then ride it up and dispose of some zombiemen waiting at the top - also watch out for a spiderdemon to the west that can shoot at you. Go through the doorway at the north end and kill a waiting revenant, then head down the steps to a second grassy area before passing through another doorway to your right. Slay some chaingunners then press the button at the south end to open a pentagram door outside, revealing a rocket launcher and the blue keycard.

Kill an arch-vile that teleports in behind you, then go and collect the blue key to trigger an ambush by chaingunners, shotgun guys and two or three arachnotrons. Head back to the lift you used earlier and open a blue skull door next to it to reveal a crucifix button, which will raise a bridge to the spiderdemon's chamber, then head across and kill it to clear your path - also watch out for a knight (or baron of Hell on UV and NM) that teleports behind you, along with revenants that teleport in when the spiderdemon dies. Go down the staircase behind the spiderdemon and push past a revenant and two shotgun guys to reach a door, open it then turn left and follow the path until you are ambushed by a mancubus and imps. Continue forward until you see a lift lower ahead, ride it up then push past a couple of zombies and a knight (the last monster can teleport behind you) to reach the exit door, behind which you will find a chaingunner guarding the exit button.

Other points of interest[edit]

A plasma gun and two energy cell packs (and a supercharge on I'm Too Young To Die and Hey Not Too Rough) can be found in the room next to the spiderdemon, guarded by two revenants.

Secrets[edit]

  1. When you go down the staircase to the open grassy area on the south-east end of the map, you can hear a lift lowering. This lift is located at the back of the monster closet that opens upon activating the switch that lowers the fence gate to the blue key. Ride up this lift to reach an alcove (sector 259) with four armor bonuses and a "LOCK" panel to open secret #2.
  2. The panel in secret #1 opens a passage (sector 313) on the wall of the staircase to a room with a supercharge. There is also a teleporter that takes you to a small room overlooking the grassy area, where you can collect a partial invisibility.
