Secrets[edit]

  1. At the parking lot that is not flooded at the beginning of the map, you can see a vent to the west. The vent is unreachable but next to it is a closed garage door. When you open the yellow key door, you will find three switches behind it, one of which is labelled "Doors"; this will trigger an ambush but also open the entrance to the "Hot House" gym in the east of the central hall. At the back end of the gym is a locker room where one of the lockers has a blank door. Open it to raise the door of the garage in the parking lot. Go through it to get a sawed-off shotgun and armor scraps. (sector 562)
  2. In the room with the projector at the north end, use the Mad Max poster to find a room with armor scraps and a first-aid kit. (sector 674)
  3. Crouch and enter the War Games store. Jump over the counter and use the switch to open the storage room where you can nab a collectible. (sector 760)
  4. In the room past the yellow door, use the switch to unlock doors, then return to the main section of the mall and enter the store next to Captain J's. Jump over the counter and use the register to access Captain J's, where you can get a Master Blaster. (sector 826)
  5. In the kitchen at the northeast end, if you use the left oven on the south wall, you will open a vent above it with a first-aid kit. (sector 881)

Bugs[edit]

Things 67, 68, and 444 through 455 have no flags set for any of the five difficulty classes, so they do not actually appear in the level.

Trivia[edit]

The original release of episode 1 featured Herbert Chappell's "The Gonk" as the speaker song featured at the map's climax, as a nod to the original Dawn of the Dead movie. This was changed in the Enriched Edition due to copyright issues encountered during streamed or recorded runs of this map.

Another often missed Easter egg is the sector model interpretation of the original V8 Interceptor used in the Mad Max movies, now sitting mysteriously abandoned in the flooded parking deck.
