Walkthrough[edit]
Essentials[edit]
Take the shotgun and follow a trail of health bonuses to get outside, then run up the red rocks in the lava pool to the east to reach the door leading to the main lobby. Press the skull switch in the south-west corner of the lobby and kill the various monsters that teleport in while you wait for it to open, then go down the steps below the switch and open the door at the bottom to find a lift. Ride the lift down to a nukage pool and follow the square lights west, north and west to a walkway with two blue doors, then go to the east end and flip the switch here to raise a bridge over the nukage. Follow the bridge back to the lift, then go north to a skull switch and press it to trigger an ambush by imps/Hell knights, demons and chaingunners; once all the monsters have appeared, the switch will lower to reveal a lift. Ride the lift up and climb the steps to the east, then go north to a lion switch and press it to open another lift directly ahead; you will need this later.
Kill a revenant that appears, then follow the path north and east into a cavern and go to the south end to find a skull switch, which will open a cage through the window and reveal a pentagram teleporter which you will need later. Go to the north end of the cavern to get outside to a ledge overlooking a highly damaging lava pool, then continue south up the steps to get back inside the main building—note the three Hell knights/revenants that are waiting on the red rocks you can see through the windows. Go back to the lift you opened earlier and ride it down a door that leads to a computer room, then flip the switch in the south-east corner to raise some platforms from the nukage visible through the window ahead. Ride the lift back up and cross the platforms to another door, then step through it to get the blue skull key. Now go back to the computer room and flip the switch in the south-west corner to open both of the blue doors you passed earlier, then go outside (the doors will close behind you) and follow the walkway to the yellow skull key.
Drop to the ground below and climb up the north-east steps, then follow the path south and go through a dark tunnel to reach a red skull switch, which will raise a red rock near the yellow key pedestal. Climb back up to the walkway and run across the rock you just raised to get back into the computer room, then go back to the lobby and open the yellow door at the north end to find steps going down to the pentagram teleporter you opened earlier. The teleporter goes to a large room to the south-east, where you will need to fight off waves of cacodemons (and pain elementals on Ultra-Violence (UV) and Nightmare (NM) skill levels) as the floor sinks into the surrounding lava; you will only be able to escape once the pillars in the corners lower, allowing you to get the red skull key, megaarmor and supercharge on them. Go through the red door to return to the lobby, then go back to the starting point and open the painting between the red skull strips to reveal a button that will open the nearby barrier. Take the computer area map and enter the portal to go to MAP11: Echoes of Pain.
Secret exit[edit]
Refer to secrets #9 and #10 below for information on reaching the secret exit to MAP16: Panopticon.
Other points of interest[edit]
You can find an incinerator on the south side of the yellow key area.
Secrets[edit]
- Climb up to the tallest red rock at the start of the level, then run west to the rock with the chaingun (or berserk pack on UV and NM). (sector 79)
- There are four metal poles on the ledge in front of the lobby entrance—three of the poles have candles on them, while the second pole from the west has a red light. Step over this pole, then run back to the starting room and climb up the rock steps on the east side to get a calamity blade (or chaingun on UV and NM) before it rises out of reach. (sector 34)
- In the lobby, go down the steps then look back to see that one of the steps has a pair of eyes on it. Walk over this step, then run down the steps to the lift and ride it down to the nukage pool. As the lift descends you will see a button on a column at the west end of the room. Shoot the button before it closes to open a wall at the top of the lift, then ride another lift behind this wall down to a radiation shielding suit. (sector 333)
- In the lava at the north end of the map, go to the steps at the north-east end. Walking over the bottom step will lower two lava pools in the cavern to the east for a few seconds, revealing a supercharge and rockets. (sector 273) The lava inflicts 20% damage at a time, so using a radiation suit is recommended here.
- East of the walkway with the yellow key is a small ledge with two health bonuses. Open the wall behind this ledge to reveal a button and press it to lower the floor behind the red skull switch to the west, revealing a hidden switch. (sector 588)
- After getting the yellow key and returning to the computer room, look at the north wall to see a thin switch between two of the screens. Flip this switch to open a teleporter next to it which goes back to the lobby entrance, then drop down the hole in front of you to find a lift with a supercharge. (sector 162)
- Pressing the switch in secret #5 will raise the lift you used to access secret #3. You can now use the lift to climb over the low wall with the eyes and reach the white ledge overlooking the nukage pool, which holds a rocket launcher and a radiation suit. (sector 324)
- From secret #7, go to the west end of the nukage pool then straferun north across a gap to reach an invulnerability and two rockets, as well as a fuel tank on UV and NM. (sector 409)
- In the lava at the north end of the map, go to the top of the gray rocks by the west wall then rocket jump to the ledge below with a box of rockets and a megaarmor (plus a radiation suit on Hurt Me Plenty or lower). It is also possible, though difficult, to land there with a straferun jump from one of the lower steps. (sector 817)
- Landing on secret #9 will open the barred window to the south. Step through the window to see a wall open ahead, then flip the switch behind it (requiring the red key) to open the secret exit. (sector 965)
