Walkthrough[edit]
Essentials[edit]
Blue key[edit]
Head up the steps to collect a super shotgun, which stands on the edge of a large ice arena that you will revisit later. Go to the north-east side of the arena to find a demon guarding an armor then head down the steps here to find a chaingun guarded by zombiemen and shotgun guys. Go through the north doorway and follow the tunnel east past some imps to another ice area, then head up the steps in the north-east corner to a ledge that has cacodemons on it. Press the gargoyle switch at the end of the ledge, which will release revenants, lost souls and more cacodemons into the area, then drop down to the ice and walk west to a step with a rocket launcher - from here you can shoot a second gargoyle switch that has been revealed inside the column to the north-west, raising some steps leading into a tunnel.
Enter the tunnel and press the gargoyle switch at the end, which will open the wall on your left to reveal cacodemons and zombies, then step through to find a water pool overlooked by one or two revenants. Walk west through the water to a room with several enemies (including a Hell knight on Hurt Me Plenty skill level or lower, or a mancubus on Ultra-Violence (UV) and Nightmare (NM)) then lower the lift on the west side and ride it up to the neighboring ledge. From here you can walk north then west to find the blue skull key.
Yellow key and exit[edit]
From the blue key, drop into the water below then lower the lift in the south-east corner and ride it up - from here you can return to the starting arena, where you will see that the south side has lowered. Drop into the pit and go to the center column to find a plasma gun and megasphere (or supercharge on UV and NM) in front of a gargoyle switch; ready yourself before pressing the switch as it will open four monster closets containing imps and demons, and you will also need to dodge two arch-viles and several cacodemons that teleport to the platforms above you. Fight the monsters while you wait for a wall in the north-west corner to lower and reveal more demons and imps (the imps are replaced with knights on UV and NM) guarding a lift, then ride this lift up to the yellow skull key.
From here, open the east door to get on to the upper part of the arena then go to the center column again - a second gargoyle switch has been revealed on its north side that will raise a pair of bridges, allowing you to get back to the ledge where you found the super shotgun (if you fall off, press the bridges to lower them like lifts). Walk east to a yellow key door and open it, kill the imps and zombies in the passage ahead then follow it to another gargoyle switch (there will be another supercharge here on I'm Too Young To Die (ITYTD) and Hey Not Too Rough (HNTR)). Press the switch to lower the floor and kill the imps and revenants that are revealed to your right, then drop down to an ice chamber and kill the arch-vile and cacodemons that are released above you. Press the gargoyle switch on the center column to raise the north-east and south-west bridges, then press on the bridges to lower them like lifts so you can get to the north-east and south-west alcoves where you will find two more switches. Press both switches then cross to the south-east closet to find an exit switch leading to MAP16: Cold Shoulder.
Secret exit[edit]
After getting the yellow key proceed as normal to get back to the ledge where you found the super shotgun, but instead of walking east to the yellow key door, return to the starting point and open the east wall to reveal secret #1 if you have not done so already. Open the yellow key door here and press the gargoyle switch in front of you to lower the walls on either side, then walk east through a trench that has been created to reach a lift and press it to reveal two imps and a revenant. Kill them then get on the lift and ride it up to another gargoyle switch, which is guarded by a revenant on UV and NM.
Drop down into the exit area and kill the cacodemons that are released above you, then go to the south wall which has lowered to reveal a mancubus. Go up the steps here and kill all the waiting enemies, then go through the west doorway and follow the ledge round to a gargoyle switch which will lower the floor you are standing on to reveal two spectres (plus another mancubus on HMP or higher), as well as lowering the north-east wall to reveal imps and revenants guarding a lift. Ride this lift up to return to the exit area and kill the pain elementals and cacodemons that teleport in, then press the north-west bridge that has risen to lower it like a lift - from here you can enter the north-west closet to press a cyberdemon-like switch that will take you to MAP31: Crimson Complex.
Other points of interest[edit]
On ITYTD and HNTR, an invulnerability can be found by the wall hiding the yellow key.
Secrets[edit]
- Open the wall behind the starting point to find a megaarmor, a stimpack, a backpack, and a yellow key door that leads to the secret exit. (sector 2)
