Essentials[edit]

Take the chaingun on the island in front of you then head west to a teleporter which is guarded by a baron of Hell. Enter the teleporter to go to the south side of the fort then head north around the walkway surrounding it until you reach a skull switch and some health bonuses. Press the switch then go back to where you teleported, walk south into the trench below then head east and north through a blood pool to reach the blue skull key. Go back to the walkway and open the blue door on its west side to enter a room with one or two revenants, then enter the hallway on the west side. You will hear something open nearby – go into the middle passage to see an alcove with an armor and a skull switch, press it then go back into the western hallway to find that steps have risen going up to a plasma gun.

Press the gargoyle switch behind the plasma gun to open the lifts to the second level of the fort, then go back outside and press another gargoyle switch opposite the blue door to lower one of those lifts. There are two eye switches at the south end of the second, one on either side of the red door leading to the fort’s interior – after pressing both switches, go back down to the first level of the walkway and go round to the east side where a staircase has risen. Climb the stairs and press the gargoyle switch at the south end of the room to lower a lift that goes up to the red skull key, then ride the lift back down and go south to a skull switch that is overlooked by a mancubus. After pressing this switch, go back into the red key room and head north to another skull switch that will raise steps leading up to the red door.

Go through the red door to reach the titular altar and collect the BFG9000 sitting on it, which will close the entrance to the room and allow revenants and nightmare imps/barons that teleport in. Kill them using your new weapon, press the gargoyle switch at the south end of the room to open the entrance again, then go back to the second level of the fort and collect the yellow skull key that has appeared at the north end of the ledge. Go back through the blue door and head north through a yellow door, then press the gargoyle switch at the end of the path to raise a step into the tunnel ahead. Follow the tunnel round two corners to see the exit switch ahead – as you approach it, bars will close to block your path and two revenants will be released behind you. Press the eye switch behind the revenants to open the exit switch and press it to go to MAP16: Dark Citadel.

Secret exit[edit]

Other points of interest[edit]

Secrets[edit]

  1. Head east of the start and press on the south wall in the tunnel to find a supercharge. (sector 59)
  2. From the yellow key platform, jump north to the one with the supercharge. Notice that that shape of the supercharge platform points to the north-east wall. Go through that wall to find the secret exit. (sector 31)
