MAP17: Fortress: The Bailey is a level in Strife. It uses the music track "Suspense".

This level is the central area of the Bishop's fortress and connects with all other areas of the fortress.

Overview[edit]

Spoiler Warning: Plot details follow.

Having learned from the Oracle that the Bishop holds the second piece of the Sigil, you travel to their fortress to hunt them down. Your journey begins in the bailey - as you enter it, BlackBird informs you that The Front has an informant, Quincy, who works in the hospital. Quincy tells you that the entrance to the Bishop's tower is protected by a forcefield; to disable it, you must fight through the security complex to a teleporter, and use it to enter the administration center where you can destroy the central computer. Quincy also mentions that the warehouse has received a shipment of maulers.

Spoilers end here.

Essentials[edit]

Finding Quincy[edit]

You enter this level from the borderlands. Go through the door and step over the orange barrier - if you acquired the officer uniform from the previous level then you will be allowed to proceed, otherwise the alarm will be raised. Talk to the red acolyte ahead and he will open the bars blocking the exits from the room (there is also a button behind his desk that will perform the same function). Turn right and lower the lift ahead, ride this up and go through the door in front of you to enter the bailey.

As you head outside, BlackBird will tell you that a Front informant works at the hospital - head north-east past the gray-panelled building ahead, then turn left at the fountain to find the hospital. Go inside and speak to the red-haired Quincy, who will tell you how to disable the forcefield blocking the door to the Bishop's tower. Talking to Quincy also allows his assistant to sell you healing items on request.

Leave the hospital, turn right at the fountain and then turn left when you reach the ivy-covered wall. Go forward and enter the silver door on your left, then open the large gate ahead and approach the lift ahead to enter the security complex.

To the Bishop's tower[edit]

After returning to the bailey from the administration center, go through the silver door ahead and then go straight forward to another door, using the card reader on your right to open the way forward. Go to the fountain and turn right, then go past the hospital to a set of steps. Climb up these to see a wooden door flanked by red and black banners. Go through this door and head forward to enter the Bishop's tower.

Other points of interest[edit]

While talking to Quincy, he mentions a shipment of maulers at the warehouse. Follow the guide above to reach the security complex, but instead of going inside that building climb up the stairs south-east of the entrance. At the top, turn right and go into the small building ahead, then throw the switch inside to lower the forcefields around the nearby doors. Leave the building and go through the silver door ahead on your right, then go straight forward to the lift and ride it upwards. Go down the stairs in this room and open the door at the bottom to reach the warehouse.

There is a stash of items inside the building south-west of the fountain. Go through either of the entrances to this building and climb up the staircases to the west. At the top, open the north door to find a small room with two boxes of bullets and a metal armor. This room also holds two assault rifles and a pile of phosphorous grenades in multiplayer.

Secrets[edit]

Official[edit]

There are no official secrets on this level in the original game. The Veteran Edition changed the second item below to be an official secret.

Non-official[edit]

  • The hospital has a storeroom that is visible through a window near Quincy's station. Enter the stairs and press the southern wall near the top to open a doorway into the storeroom. You can find a metal armor, an ammo satchel, four units of mini-missiles and health equipment here.
  • A narrow passage runs through the security complex. You can enter the passage from either end by using crates as jump steps. Halfway the passage, there is an entrance to a room, where you can find a valve. Use it to lower the water level of the nearby channel and enter the room on the bottom. Take the metal armor and step on the teleporter. You will arrive at a small room that is located inside the eastern stone building at the gate of the Bishop's tower. Have 100 gold coins, a shadow armor, a surgery kit and various ammunition items. (sector 167)
  • There are many pipes at the northeast corner of the yard. Thread there and get on the adjacent pipe structure. Run over a gap onto another pipe that goes along the northern wall of the security complex. The wall has a doorway. Enter it and go up the lift to reach an L-shaped area. At its eastern end, there is a wall with a misaligned texture. Press it to discover a room that has poison bolts, phosphorous grenades and three medical kits. Instead of entering the teleporter there, move to the other end of the L-shaped area. Collect the ammunition and drop to a lower level in the south. From there, you can yet access a room that holds a leather armor. The local teleporter leads inside the western stone building at the gate of the Bishop's tower.
