MAP23: Lunar Mining Project is the twenty-third map of TNT: Evilution. It was designed by Paul Turnbull, and uses the music track "Bye Bye American Pie" from Doom II (the same as Doom II's MAP23).

This level was also ported to PlayStation Final Doom as MAP21: Lunar Mining Project.

Walkthrough[edit]

Essentials[edit]

You start in the southern portion of the map backing the blue exit door. The blue key is placed in the northern cave system. The yellow key is also required in this level and lies in one of the eastern rooms. The central area, which you may glimpse through the windows, requires a red key but is optional.

There are two doors in the room you start in. Both lead to visually identical rooms, but as mentioned above the yellow key is on the eastern side. So, take the eastern door here. In the next room, there are four small doors on the right. They all lead to quite similar rooms. You need the third, penultimate, door, but it is advisable to enter all the rooms one by one beginning from the first one, as the shotgun guys within the rooms may shoot you through windows. Take the yellow key in the third room.

You can now proceed further to the north by opening any yellow door. You may want to find a dark room in which there is a red key. This is optional to collect, but if you wish to do so, climb up on a chair and take it. Anyways, take the lift in the west of the room to descend into the cave. There, turn right and use another lift to go up. Follow the tunnel straight. Jump over the first and second pits, then drop down into another cave with the nukage river (in case you fell down into the first pit, turn left, not right, jump over another pit and you will be in that the same cave). Cross the river and enter an opening with the blue keycard. Take it. Be prepared for an ambush here. Some of them will also spawn in various parts of the map.

Now, when you have found the blue card return to the starting position and open the blue exit door. Fight everyone in this room (if they are present) and walk through the mountain depiction to end this level.

Other points of interest[edit]

If you climb up to the red key platform, you will notice two rooms with supplies near the red key. The eastern one contains a berserk pack and a box of rockets. Entering it will open a monster closet in the western section of the room.

Picking up the red key will allow accessing the central courtyard, inside of which is a rocket launcher and a super shotgun. Picking the former up will teleport in several enemies.

Playing this level in co-op will open up several new areas that are otherwise inaccessible in single-player. These include:

  • A small cache in the southernmost room in the eastern hallway that contains a box of shotgun shells and a security armor.
  • A similar cache in the northernmost room that contains a box of shotgun shells, a security armor, and a medikit.
  • An extra portion of the monster closet that opens up when you grab the berserk pack, which contains five lost souls, but only on Ultra-Violence and Nightmare skill levels.
  • An area in the westernmost section of the level, which contains two imps and some ammunition. Attempting to pick it up will open two walls, with enemies and supplies behind them (except on the lowest two skill levels, where no enemies are present in this section of the level at all).

Secrets[edit]

  1. From the start, go through the eastern door. There are four doors on the eastern side of this hallway. Enter the third one from the south. To the left of the yellow keycard is a bookshelf behind a medikit. Open the bookshelf to find an imp and another medikit. (On HMP or higher, you will also find a box of shotgun shells.) (sector 271)
  2. In the room with the red key, open a panel on the northern wall, marked by a different texture. Behind it is a room with an imp, a stimpack, and a box of shotgun shells. (sector 235)
  3. There is a cave in the northwest of the mining tunnels. In the middle of the cave there is a table with an invulnerability sphere. Sprint-jump on the table to get it. (sector 293)

Design oddities[edit]

Six of the seven shotguns are only accessible in deathmatch mode (or by using the idclip cheat), but are not tagged as multiplayer-only.
