Map of Pitfalls
Letters in italics refer to marked spots on the map. Sector, thing, and linedef numbers in boldface are secrets which count toward the end-of-level tally.

Essentials[edit]

Kill the zombies around you then open the doors on the east and west sides of the room to access two compartments with switches. Flip both switches to lower the yellow skull key in the middle of the room, then open the northern door to find one or two Hell knights guarding another switch, which you can flip to lower a staircase going down to a large crossroads. Kill an approaching cacodemon then run north from the crossroads to leap across a pit and land on a ledge with a gargoyle switch, then press the switch to raise the rocks on the west side of the cave. Step south-east to land on a teleporter in the pit below that will return you to the crossroads, then go to the rocks and climb them to reach the teleporter at the south end, which goes to the hallways at the south-west end of the map.

Follow the hallway and take the first opening on your right, then take the left-hand path at the junction ahead and go straight forward to two doors. Go through the northern door and walk round the right-hand wall to find a computer area map in front of an eye switch, press the switch then kill the shotgun guys and Hell knight that are released nearby before returning to the hallway. Go through the southern door and dispose of a cacodemon, then step across the narrow walkway to reach some steps that go up to a second eye switch. Press this switch then return to the hallway and walk west to a large hall that has opened, then go to the far end of the hall to get a rocket launcher. Kill one or more barons of Hell that teleport in around you, then go through either of the doors that have opened in the south-east wall and follow the path round to a raised ledge where you can reach the blue skull key.

Return to the hallways, where some revenants have appeared, then go to the north-east end and open the blue door to see a baron and shotgun guy guarding a satyr switch. Press the switch then return to the entrance teleporter to go back to the cave, then go round to the north-east corner where a flesh bridge has risen – a column with a supercharge will lower when you get close to it. Cross the bridge and follow the path until it leads you to a skull switch, press the switch to lower a column to your right holding the yellow skull key then drop into the pit to collect it. Enter the nearby teleporter to return to the crossroads then go back to the starting room and open the red bars here to reach a skull lever. After flipping the lever, return to the hallways in the south-west of the map and go straight forward, entering the second opening on the left to reach the exit room. Push past one or two knights (and an arch-vile on Ultra-Violence and Nightmare skill levels) and drop down the hole in the middle of the room to finish the level.

Other points of interest[edit]

The tunnel on the north side of the blue key hall contains an invulnerability.

Secrets[edit]

  1. When you enter the main cavern, drop off to the right and head south to a skull switch. This lowers the nearby lift. Take it up and you will find a rocket launcher, an energy cell, and a box of rockets. (sector 400)
  2. When you teleport to the hallways at the south-west end, take the first fork on the left and turn right. Press on the wall to the left that has slime on it to find rockets and medikits. (sector 96)
  3. In the hallway at the south-west end, go south-west until you see a bunch of lion faces in the hall. One of these faces is a satyr face. Shoot it, then head north-east and past the entrance on the right, then into the alcove to the right which has a megaarmor. (sector 235)
