This level occupies the map slot MAP33. For other maps which occupy this slot, see Category:MAP33.

MAP33: Betray is a secret map exclusive to the Xbox version of Doom II, included with the Xbox Collector's Editions of Doom 3 and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil. It can be accessed from MAP02: Underhalls, and contains SS Nazis for no apparent reason. It uses the music track "Read Me While Listening To This" which is otherwise used as the game's text screen soundtrack.

Completing this level takes the player to MAP03: The Gantlet.

It was originally a 1995 level designed by Michael Bukowski, a programmer for the Doom 3 port with Vicarious Visions. A bugfixed version, based on the Xbox version, can be downloaded at ClassicDoom.com alongside the Xbox version; in both cases, the level is located on MAP01. The Xbox version is a tweaked-up version of the original 1995 level.

The Xbox 360 port of Doom II and the Doom 3: BFG Edition version also contain this level; in the latter, all SS Nazis, with the exception of one, were removed. However, it is inaccessible in both versions because the exit switch leading to the level in MAP02 is inoperable (in the Xbox 360 version, it does nothing; in the BFG Edition version, the switch causes MAP02 to be restarted).

In the Doom II 2019 re-release for the Doom Classic Unity port, the map is omitted entirely; it is not accessible in an editor or to be found in the IWAD, as the IWAD itself is based off the v1.9 version instead.

Walkthrough[edit]

Letters in italics refer to marked spots on the map. Sector, thing, and linedef numbers in boldface are secrets which count toward the end-of-level tally.

Essentials[edit]

Open the north door, step in three teleporters that will lead to each other. On your third destination press the switches in the room and then step into the teleporter, it will lead to a room with a red key in a northwest alcove.

After taking the red key, step on the teleporter which will lead you back to start, then take the eastern teleporter. Open the western door, and the door behind it, press all five switches in that room, which will open five alcoves across the walls in the outer room. In these alcoves are switches; press them all, and then open the eastern door. Go into the western alcove and press the switch. That will open the middle alcove with two switches to press, which will open the eastern alcove and lower a teleporter in there. Step on that teleporter, which will lead you to a series of two rooms with teleporters.

On the third destination, there are three square brick pillars. On the south-eastern pillar, its west side is green tinted. Press that side to lower the western pillar, step on the lowered pillar, take the blue key and step on the teleporter. Turn 180 degrees, press the switch and take the teleporter. The south-eastern pillar has now lowered in the room, step on the lowered pillar to get teleported, then take another teleporter.

Take the south-northern teleporter, then open the south door and take the teleporter behind it. Press the switches on the eastern side of the room to lower two teleporters on the opposite side of the room. Take the northern teleporter, take the yellow key and then the teleporter. Take the southern teleporter, open the door and press on the exit signed pillar.

Other points of interest[edit]

Secrets[edit]

  1. When you start the level, enter the room directly to the north, and go through the teleporter. After this, use the teleporter to the east, and flip the switch you find in the next room. A compartment will open nearby containing a medikit and a switch. (sector 11)
  2. Flip the switch in secret #1. When you access the red keycard, you will find that a closet has opened behind the keycard to reveal a rocket launcher and a backpack. (sector 26)
  3. In the eastern section of the level, a portion of the stone wall to the south is not covered in grime. Open it to find two armor bonuses, a rocket, a box of rockets, a box of bullets, a box of shells, a blur artifact, a light amplification visor, a megasphere, and a BFG9000. (sector 76)

Bugs[edit]

On the intermission screen, the par time for this level is initially displayed as :00, but quickly switches to SUCKS. This normally only appears with the Time readout when the time taken to finish a level exceeds one hour.

In the Xbox version of the level, the teleporter in front of the yellow keycard door does not work. This is because while all of its linedefs are correctly marked as type 97 (teleports,) they are not tagged to any sector. Consequently, if you arrive here without the yellow keycard, it will become impossible to finish the level. In the PC version of this level, these linedefs are tagged, allowing you to escape from the room if you arrive without the keycard; you will be taken to the eastern section of the map.
