MAP34: Four Comas is the thirty-fourth map of Rabbit's All-comers Mapping Project 2023. It was designed by dawnbreez and uses the music track "Running from Evil" by Robert Prince, as well as an ambient track called "COMA" by dawnbreez, along with two fanmade tracks for Pizza Tower, "Pillar John's Revenge" (D_RUNNER) by Vozaxhi and "Undeservioli" (D_MADMAN) by Spook Lass.

Essentials[edit]

Four Comas takes heavy inspiration from Myhouse.wad, presenting the player with different thematic versions of a simple base layout, simulating a gradual descent into madness.

OTEX base[edit]

You start in a small OTEX techbase. Follow the hallway down the stairs and down the path all the way to the back of the courtyard to obtain the blue key. On the way to the courtyard you passed the armory that requires the blue key and the red key door. Enter the armory, get the ammo and the red key. Now enter the red key room. There is a teleport pad; this will teleport to the start of a medieval, Hellish version of the same base.

Hellish base[edit]

Again, just follow the base from start to finish. The blue and red skull are in the exact same location as in the OTEX base. Get to the teleport pad and take it.

Madness[edit]

You find yourself back in the OTEX techbase. "Running from Evil" cuts out and D_COMA starts, consisting mostly of silence interspersed with occasional ambient sound effects. The goal of the level is to explore a total of 14 versions of the level (and a bonus section) and trigger any of the six endings.

Item puzzle & Keens[edit]

In the Winchester house, accessed by using the typewriter in the OTEX office area or through the armory inside the Undefined base, there is a puzzle room in place where the armory normally is. The main point of the map is to obtain seven items scattered across the level to access two special endings. Another objective is to hunt down all twelve Commander Keens across the various versions of the level to obtain a secret ending.

In-depth info[edit]

This section breaks down the level layout and progression. It is highly recommended to go through the map at least once yourself.

Versions of the house[edit]

  1. OTEX: start and the eventual end
  2. Hellish: medieval, more hellish base
  3. Mirrored OTEX: mirrored OTEX base
  4. Mirrored Hell: mirrored hellish base
  5. Winchester: old-style mansion
  6. Blank: completely white textured
  7. Undefined: uses placeholder textures on purpose
  8. Flooded: concrete water-flooded base
  9. Dark: black void-like horror area with a still of Doomguy fighting three imps and an IKEA section
  10. Silver: silver-based modern area
  11. Fireblu: fireblu corrupted OTEX base
  12. Dentist: DOOM-ish outdoor area with a surgical bed that functions as an instant resurrection
  13. Techbase: vanilla techbase with exit
  14. Dead base: deserted OTEX base with exit.

Connections between versions of the base[edit]

  10. >2 armory, >8 courtyard
  11. >2 pad, >7 courtyard
  12. >armory2
  13. >exit pad
  14. >exit pad

1. ^ This teleport changes based on the amount of items obtained or if you've killed all Keens (see Endings)
2. ^ The Dentist version is reached by dying anywhere, and the surgical bed in the armory will teleport you back to where you died.

Legend: pad = teleport pad, mirror = bathroom mirror, courtyard = drop down at the sides in the courtyard, start = starting door, else = some form of teleportation in the appropriate section.

Item locations[edit]

The seven item locations, version and location in order left to right in the Winchester 'armory':

  1. Pills: teleporter room in Blank
  2. Crystal: start in Fireblu
  3. Gun: offices in Dark
  4. Snake: courtyard in Winchester
  5. Plastics: offices in Silver
  6. Fuel: storage in Dentist (Snake won't spawn but will count)
  7. Book: teleporter room in Flooded
  • There are two additional items that can picked up, though neither is necessary to gain access to the Final lap: a coal scuttle in front of the snake pedestal in the Winchester area, and a red and white target behind the red door in the Undefined area.

Keen locations[edit]

The twelve Keen locations (as they serve as endings, Techbase and Dead base have no Keen), version and location:

  1. OTEX: courtyard, hanging from the large fireblu arch
  2. Hellish: bathroom behind a hidden wall, opposite of the mirrored Keen
  3. Mirrored OTEX: opposite of the Fireblu button, on the ceiling
  4. Mirrored Hell: bathroom, opposite of the hidden Keen
  5. Winchester: bedroom (missable, as this room is replaced with the bathroom exit to the OTEX base once the Snake in the courtyard is collected)
  6. Blank: one of the offices
  7. Undefined: armory, Winchester teleporter
  8. Dark: one of the side isles of the IKEA section
  9. Silver: right of the pad, same as in the Flooded base but visible
  10. Flooded: right of the pad, hidden (red blood texture is visible)
  11. Fireblu: bathroom, to the left
  12. Dentist: on the ledge in the courtyard, close to the green armor

Endings[edit]

The level has a distinct six endings to obtain which are all mutually exclusive, except for perhaps Final Lap and Sans which can be combined to UV-Max the level. Most endings are triggered by taking the teleport pad in the second base.

  1. Techbase: If you die at any point (see Dentist), resurrect and take the teleport pad in the Hellish base to be transported to the Techbase. Take the teleporter pad to exit.
  2. Dead base: If you enter the Fireblu base and afterwards go back to the OTEX base, you will find it deserted ('dead'). Take the teleporter pad to exit.
  3. Dog: Obtain 5 or 6 items from the Winchester puzzle and take the pad in the Hellish base. This ending is a homage to one of the joke endings of Silent Hill 2.
  4. Final lap: Obtain all seven items that correspond with a statue on the Snake pedestal in the Winchester area and take the pad in the Hellish base. You will spawn inside a small room behind the now opened steel door next to the red door of the Dentist area. A modified arch-vile (Super-Vile) will spawn and chase you throughout your run to the exit teleporter unless you kill it. Shoot the target in the courtyard to open the steel door upstairs at the other end of the area, leading to the Silver base. Find and shoot the target on each version of base to open the way forward, moving through all versions (except 13 & 14) this way. Reach the secret exit at the end of the OTEX base to exit the map.
  5. Final lap+: During the Final lap, trigger another by stepping on the teleporter pad in the Hellish base (ignore the warning). You will be chased throughout your run by seven Super-Viles, that will immediately respawn whenever killed, making running away the only option. Reach the secret exit sector in the OTEX base to exit the map.
  6. Sans: Kill all Commander Keens and take the teleporter pad in Hellish base. This is also possible during the Final lap.

UV-Max/100%[edit]

It is possible to UV max the map: go for the Final lap ending, keeping at least one Commander Keen alive, then during the Final Lap kill the Super-Vile so you can roam around in peace. Make sure to get both secrets, all items and kill all monsters (including all Commander Keens). Now if you take the teleporter pad in the Hellish base, you will trigger Sans and end the level 100%.

Other points of interest[edit]

  1. There is a non-secret backpack in the courtyard in the Hellish base: the wall behind the blue skull key can be lowered.
  2. The Winchester house has a Colt .45 in the typewriter room.
  3. The Winchester house has a Winchester rifle in the storage (opposite of the puzzle room).

Multiple keys[edit]

The level contains keys in locations where you'd otherwise get stuck if you trigger these versions early.

Secrets[edit]

  1. In the Dentist version, enter the bathroom, go to the end, then through the pinkish wall to get a berserk pack and through the wall behind it to reach a small area with a poster on the wall. (sector 1613)
  2. The sector where you exit during Final lap counts as a secret. (sector 1350)
