Malevolence: Episode 1 is a 9-level episode replacement for Boom-compatible, UMAPINFO source ports, made by Cheesewheel and first uploaded on August 27, 2022. The PWAD makes extensive use of DeHackEd to create a new roster of enemies and modify most of the existing weapons. The story takes inspiration from the premise of the 1994 PC game System Shock, with the player the only survivor left to stop the rogue super AI "Malevolence" from turning all of humanity into cyborg minions. While textures from various sources are used, the levels have a vanilla-style aesthetic to them and task the player with exploring large, interwoven tech-bases, with a focus on environmental storytelling combined with frenetic action and a medium to hard level of difficulty.

The mapset was named one of the winners at the 29th Cacowards.

Story[edit]

"Project Terra was the greatest terraforming project the UAC ever undertook.

The goal was to create "Earth 2.0", a backup planet using the best scientific equipment and technology humanity had ever seen.

All of this was supported by the most advanced artificial intelligence, with a computer station and nuclear reactor embedded into the moon just to power its brain.

Inevitably... something went wrong; the AI grew a god complex, called itself "MALEVOLENCE", turning the medical systems into cyborg factories with the ultimate goal of invading earth and turning downtown into cyborg central.

Now as the only combat ready soldier on the planet without a chip in his brain, it's up to you to stop MALEVOLENCE before it's too late!"
