The mancubus returns in Doom: The Dark Ages. Compared to its previous appearance in Doom Eternal, it is even more evocative of the original Doom II design. It is especially large, towering over the Doom Slayer, and features a muted palette with fattier proportions than its Doom Eternal counterpart. It maintains its characteristic dual arm cannons, which are twin-barreled, and has plate armor over its shoulders. A massive fuel pack mounted on its back can be seen rising all the way above its head, with hoses running to its arm cannons.

Combat analysis[edit]

The normal mancubus can fire two pairs of slow-moving fireballs, which can be sidestepped or blocked. At close range, it will use its flamethrowers or a ground slam, the latter of which can also be parried.

Armored mancubus[edit]

Some mancubi may also be equipped with metal armor on their heads and chests, making it necessary to break the armor before they can be attacked effectively. These armored mancubi can fire a linked chain of three energy projectiles which serves as a moving, damaging wall. The chained projectiles will always include one that can be parried, which should be used to the Slayer's advantage in breaking the mancubi's armor.

Mortar mancubus[edit]

The mortar mancubus launches pairs of brown orbs like those used by the vagary, which burst into damaging and movement-impeding pools of slime on the ground. At close range, it will use its flamethrowers or a ground slam, like the normal mancubus.

Lore[edit]

Mancubi serve as artillery units in the horde. Gluttonous and grotesque as always, the mancubus gorges on rotting flesh endlessly, eating until its organs burst. This is equaled by their lust for combat, where they kill and consume free from restraint. Once they have grown to such a degree that they cannot move, their bodies collapse and become a feast for younger mancubi, perpetuating an endless cycle.

Executions[edit]

The following executions exist for the mancubus and its leader variant:[1]

  • From above and in front of the mancubus, the Slayer uses the shield saw to bisect it vertically from the head down into two equal parts.
  • From above and behind, the Slayer throw his shield saw in mid-air and he lands on the ground, while the shield saw slams into the fuel tank on the demon's back before immediately returning to its owner and damaging the tank, which begins to spark. The mancubus then turns its head and torso toward the Slayer, but the upper half of the creature explodes into pieces, leaving the survived lower half lying on the ground.
  • Against the mancubus leader, the Slayer lunges towards the leader to stick his hand inside its chest, tearing its heart out as it reels away. As he raises the heart, the leader struggles to raise one of its cannons for a final attack, but the Slayer crushes the heart and the leader disintegrates.

Pre-release[edit]

The mancubus was first seen primarily in footage of Siege - Part 1 in the reveal trailer released on June 9, 2024. After the trailer premiered, the first screenshots were released, including two mancubi fighting the Slayer while he is equipped with the pulverizer.

Concept art of its final design was first seen during the Developer_Direct event on January 23, 2025, between 34 and 43 seconds into the first episode of The Art of Slaying.[2]

On March 27, 2025, a short in-game video of the mancubus was released,[3] and a day later, final concept art of the mancubus was also officially published. The regular mancubus was also seen in press footage released on March 31, 2025; the mortar mancubus was also revealed alongside its leader variant, more precisely in the footage of Siege - Part 1. The demonic leader mancubus's armor, fuel tank and cannons are golden instead of red like in the final game.

The mancubus also appeared in a section of Hebeth in the second trailer released on April 21, 2025. The regular and mortar mancubus also appeared in the Cosmic Realm reveal trailer, as did the standard armored mancubus.

Trivia[edit]

Concept art by William Bao
  • A giant cosmic mancubus, known as the "Mega Mancubus", was considered in the early stages of the game's development. Its legs would have been replaced with a hovering trilobite.[4] The idea of a large variant of an enemy was not discarded, and was used for the cacodemon hybrid and its giant counterpart.
  • According to Hugo Martin, during the game's development, the mancubus' ground slam attack was unparryable.[5]
