DOOM: The Mars Missions (more commonly known as MarsDoom) is a partial conversion for Doom II. The WAD was created by Berthold Beckschäfer and Thomas Lokum, and was later updated by Sparky of KISS Software. The only version ever known to have been released is the preview version, which contains about nine levels that were going to be from the completed project. A follow-up for ZDoom, called MarZDOOM, likewise never materialized.

In 2024, MarsDoom was included in the Missed Cacowards 2.

Story[edit]

After the events of Doom II, the UAC announced that all teleporter technology was to be scrapped and their research bases were to be abandoned. However, the teleportation research as well as studies on the demonic invaders was continued on the UAC base stationed on Mars. After roughly seven months of quietly-conducted research, all contact on the UAC base on Mars was lost and, a day later, Eileen O'Hara, daughter of the scientific co-ordinator of the Mars base, sent a distress signal to the UAC's headquarters while it was still investigating the loss of contact. Following the distress signal, the Doomguy set off to Mars to take care of the Hellspawn once again, rescue any survivors, and arrive back in one piece.

Changes[edit]

The game was drastically changed, and featured turrets that would fire at the player unless deactivated, new enemies, and many impressive map tricks not often seen in a WAD created before 2001. A couple of levels required the player to escort someone else to the exit before the player himself could exit the level. There is some nudity, although it is only apparent for a certain person that the player must escort to the end of a couple of levels. Due to the many changes via DeHackEd, the zombieman, shotgun guy, and heavy weapon dude are absent from this WAD. The only change to weapons was the increased fire rate for the chaingun.

Content[edit]

Custom monsters[edit]

Devilet: Resembles the gargoyle from Heretic and shoots imp fireballs. It replaces the short green torch and has 75 hit points.

Security drone: A small, mechanical drone that is capable of floating and shoots at you with a chaingun until you destroy it or get out of its line of sight. It replaces the hanging victim, guts removed and has 110 hit points. If destroyed, it explosion can damage near it.

Hell bimbo: A female succubus that can fly and has a seductive laugh. The Hell bimbo will get close to the player disguised as shotgun shells before revealing her true self and attacking with a hitscan attack. She replaces the energy cell and has 140 hit points.

Marine: A green-suited marine who attacks with a rifle. Has 200 hit points and replaces the hanging, twitching victim.

Sergeant: A gray-suited marine who attacks with three plasma bolts. Has 300 hit points and replaces the hanging victim with arms out.

Lieutenant: A red-suited marine who attacks with a rocket launcher. Has 400 hit points, is not immune to blast damage from his own rockets, and replaces the hanging victim with one leg missing. An unused variant of the lieutenant also exists, wearing brown and replacing the hanging victim with the open skull. This one also shoots a rocket launcher, but slower, and also has 400 hit points.

Demon lord: A partially invisible version of a baron of Hell with 1600 hit points. It replaces the Commander Keen and does not leave behind a corpse when it dies.

Cyber tank: Resembles a heavy weapon dude, but much deadlier. If you are in its line of sight, it will smother you with bullets, and if out of the line of sight, it will fire homing rockets. Has 3000 hit points and replaces Romero's head, only used in the bonus level.

Hell shade: Similar to the Hell bimbo, except partially invisible. It replaces the ammo clip and has 250 hit points. It does not count towards the kill count and also does not appear at all in the main game.

Princess of Hell: Also similar to the Hell bimbo, except much stronger. The Princess of Hell still disguises itself as shotgun shells, but will also shoot green fireballs from a distance. If close, the Princess of Hell will fire two shotgun-like hitscan attacks. The Princess of Hell will create a Hell shade if killed, and has 400 hit points. She replaces the zombieman, but does not appear in the main game.

Shapeshifter: Supposed to resemble Eileen, however, if you approach, the monster shapeshifts into a demon, and acts like one afterwards. The shapeshifter has 140 hit points and replaces the shotgun shells, but does not appear in the main game.

Custom items[edit]

Mystery sphere: A red, electrically-charged sphere that can give the effects of the soul sphere, megasphere, invulnerability, berserk pack, or partial invisibility when picked up. Replaces the health bonus.

Green keycard: Replaces the armor bonus and still gives one armor point to the player.

Scientific data: A yellow floppy disk that replaces the yellow keycard.

Custom objects[edit]

Eileen: The woman who sent the distress signal and who you must rescue. Two versions of her exist on two of the maps. The first one has 60 hit points in MAP06, and the second one has 10000000 hit points in MAP07. The first version replaces the short red torch, and the second replaces the hanging torso, looking up.

Thing in a barrel: A barrel that is red with 200 hit points and makes a growling noise. It cannot move, but it can be blown up, either by approaching it or by shooting it. Replaces the dead cacodemon.

Security autodefence: Looks like a gray robot with green lights. When you get in its line of sight, it will shoot yellow plasma bolts until you leave its line of sight. Cannot be destroyed by any means, but can be disabled through the use of switches. The actual security autodefence sprite replaces the Wolfenstein SS, but the activated autodefence is invisible and replaces the dead shotgun guy.

Mine: A mine that is invisible to the player and will explode if approached, but cannot be destroyed with weapons. Replaces the monster spawner.

Homing missile: A rocket that homes in on the player and replaces the stalagmite. Has 15 hit points, and can be fired by the cyber tank or appear by itself in a level.

Demon face: An invisible thing that replaces the heavy weapon dude and shoots two mancubus fireballs in a spread at the player when they get in its line of sight. Cannot be destroyed, but is not used in the main game.

Eye of Satan: An invisible thing that replaces the hanging torso, brain removed. When spotting the player, it speaks the Icon of Sin voice and shoots revenant rockets, both homing and non-homing, at the player. Cannot be destroyed, but is not used in the main game.

The Cube: Resembles a spawn cube from the Icon of Sin and replaces the hanging leg. This thing moves slowly towards the player, but if it gets close, it will rush and instantly kill them, even in God mode. Cannot be destroyed, but is not used in the main game.
